A former restaurant owner who participated in Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares has provided an intimate glimpse into the celebrity chef's off-screen personality, shedding light on the genuine interactions that unfolded during filming.
Charita Jones' Encounter with Gordon Ramsay
Charita Jones, the proprietor of Momma Cherri's Soul Food Shack in Brighton, featured on the Channel 4 programme in 2005. Her establishment gained significant attention after Ramsay enthusiastically finished his entire plate during the visit, which contributed to its subsequent success.
Setting Boundaries with the TV Star
In a recent discussion facilitated by CasinoHawks, Charita recounted a pivotal moment where she addressed Ramsay's use of explicit language. "He was very nice," she remarked about the chef, whose culinary exploits have also captivated audiences in the United States. "At the very beginning, when we were upstairs in the kitchen, and I think the first time he dropped the f-bomb word to one of my chefs, I looked at him and I said, ‘Gordon, do you talk like that to your mama?’ And he said, ‘No, Mama.’ I said, ‘There you go. I don't expect to hear that language.’"
Charita elaborated on her stance, emphasising that while she tolerated swearing in general contexts, direct profanity towards individuals was unacceptable. "I then treated him like my little brother. We’re equal. There was banter between the chefs. When it came to my waitresses and my staff, I wasn't having it because my thing is, and I did say to Gordon, ‘I have so much respect for you. I expect the same.’ And that was it."
The Impact on Staff and Business
Initially, the staff at Momma Cherri's Soul Food Shack were apprehensive about Ramsay's presence. However, Charita noted that this fear quickly transformed into admiration. "The staff were scared of him at first, but then every last one of them fell in love," she admitted. "We all fell in love with Gordon Ramsay. We felt like we were moving in the right direction."
The restaurant, which unfortunately closed in 2009 due to the stock market crash, experienced an unprecedented surge in popularity following the episode's broadcast. Charita described the immediate aftermath: "About 10 minutes after it started airing on Channel 4, my answer machine crashed. Everyone in the UK was trying to make a booking at my restaurant. I had friends and my family all there answering telephones, so we were fully, fully booked for six months within 20 minutes."
The Unscripted Reality of Kitchen Nightmares
Charita also highlighted the authenticity of the show, dispelling any notions of staged scenes. Her involvement began unexpectedly when she received a note through her door from Channel 4, seeking restaurants open for less than five years. Shortly after, she was informed that Ramsay would arrive in just 30 minutes. "No warning," she recalled. "I literally just took my coat off, dropped everything down, and next thing I know there was a knock at the door. I opened the door and literally they’re filming right there and then."
She affirmed the lack of retakes, underscoring the raw and real nature of the production. "People need to understand this is as it is. Every single thing you saw was real, even to the point when he sat us down when we realised that part of the problem we had was the finance side of it. That was the biggest problem. That conversation we had with Gordon was real and the emotions were real."
Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, which originally aired on Channel 4, continues to be remembered for its impactful transformations and the personal stories behind each restaurant.
