Married At First Sight UK participant Danny Hewitt has opened up about the pivotal moments that shaped his televised relationship with bride Bec Zacharia, addressing both his controversial wedding vows and subsequent honeymoon revelations that captured viewers' attention.
The Vows That Sparked Immediate Tension
Speaking exclusively to Daily Mail, the 34-year-old English groom reflected on the now-infamous moment during his vows when he joked about needing Bec to "bail me out of jail." This seemingly light-hearted comment immediately set his bride on edge, with Bec later breaking down in tears as she interpreted the reference as a potential red flag about his character.
"It was strange watching it back… it brings back all the memories," Danny admitted about viewing the episode. He described seeing Bec walk down the aisle as a standout moment, noting "She looked beautiful in her dress. I was just trying to take it all in. I knew it was going to be a moment I hopefully only do once in my life."
A Joke That Failed to Land
Danny insisted the jail reference was never meant to be taken seriously, explaining "I obviously meant it as a joke. The seriousness in it was more like Bonnie and Clyde have each other's backs." He acknowledged feeling "weird" watching how strongly Bec reacted in the moment but emphasised he never blamed her for getting upset.
"It's a stressful day. You probably haven't slept. Emotions are high. Stress is high and things can be perceived the wrong way," he added, highlighting the intense pressure of the wedding day environment.
Cultural Differences in Humour
The groom defended his comedic approach, suggesting cultural differences rather than immaturity explained his style. "Being from England, we are just cheekier. The comedy scene is massive… there's a lot of sarcasm. It's laugh or cry mentality and you've got to pick laugh every time," he explained.
Danny also addressed Bec's visible concern about his friendship group, which included a well-known Magic Men performer among his groomsmen. "The girls instantly think you're a stripper or you're a party boy. But that's my job to show Bec that I'm not," he said, adding "I don't blame her. If I turned up and she was there with a load of people who made her look a certain kind of way, maybe I'd think the same."
The Honeymoon Honesty That Created Waves
While the couple appeared initially loved-up after their wedding ceremony, significant cracks emerged during their honeymoon when Danny admitted feeling the sexual chemistry was lacking between them. This confession devastated Bec, who later expressed feeling judged on her looks and "friend-zoned" immediately after intimacy.
Danny has firmly rejected this interpretation, clarifying "I didn't say there's no connection. What I said was our sexual chemistry is low." He defended his brutal honesty as necessary rather than hurtful, arguing "If I was to lie to Bec… you might spare her feelings in that moment, but in the long run she's going to be more hurt."
Behind the Edited Scenes
The groom suggested the show's editing has focused disproportionately on awkward moments, despite their honeymoon featuring plenty of positive experiences. "We had some really good days and really good moments," he revealed. "But the only bit I've seen so far is us talking about the lack of chemistry, where it looks like I friend-zoned Bec - and that wasn't the way it was."
Danny emphasised their relationship had "so many positives" at the time, with the chemistry concern representing the only significant issue he believed needed addressing between them.
Unexpected Journey to Reality TV
Revealing how he joined the experiment, Danny explained he never actively sought out the show, claiming producers approached him instead. "I never thought in a million years I'd do it. But it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience and if I could walk away with love, that was the icing on the cake," he said.
Since the first episode aired, Danny admitted the sudden spotlight has been confronting, saying he now feels "weird" being recognised in public places.
Bucks Night Bonds and Villain Concerns
When asked about connections formed during the bucks night, Danny mentioned bonding with several fellow grooms including Steven, Filip, Scott, and controversial participant Chris Nield. He praised Chris for "stirring it up" when others were playing safe, noting "The boys were playing it a little bit safe and then you just get Chris come in not holding back. That was refreshing."
Regarding potential villain portrayal, Danny remained unconcerned, stating bluntly "No, not really, because I was just myself. If I'm a villain, I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not."
Looking Forward
As for what viewers can expect from his relationship with Bec moving forward, Danny promised the pair were "raw and honest" throughout their journey. "There were tough times, there were amazing times, but we gave it everything we had," he reflected. "I'm proud of us both for that."
Married At First Sight UK continues Thursday at 7.30pm on Channel Nine, with Danny and Bec's relationship development remaining a central storyline for audiences following the experiment.
