The broadcasting world is in mourning following the death of cherished American television presenter and reporter, Jim Vargas. His family confirmed the veteran journalist passed away on January 14, 2026, at the age of 78.

A Stellar Career Spanning Four Decades

Jim Vargas dedicated an impressive 40 years to journalism, with a significant portion spent at the US network ABC7. He was a mainstay at the broadcaster for two decades, where he became renowned for his incisive political and public affairs reporting. Vargas held this pivotal role until 1993.

His exceptional work was recognised with some of the industry's highest honours. In 1974, he was part of a team, alongside Steve David and Bob Marshall, that secured an Emmy Award for their coverage of the high-profile Patty Hearst kidnapping case.

Further cementing his reputation, Vargas contributed to a team that won a prestigious Peabody Award for their reporting on the devastating 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

Heartfelt Tributes from Friends and Colleagues

News of his passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and fond remembrance from former colleagues. Longtime KGO-TV presenter David Louie shared a tribute, recalling a description of Vargas as "the ultimate all-around reporter."

Louie emphasised Vargas's role in transforming 'News Scene' into a "formidable, legendary news operation" during the 1970s. Former colleague Frank Kracher remembered Vargas's kindness to a "new kid on the block" and his admirable work ethic, fondly mentioning his "collection of bad ties."

Close friends Carol Ivy and Ed Leslie, for whom Vargas served as best man, expressed profound sadness, stating they had been in touch with him until the end and would "miss him greatly."

The San Francisco-born journalist is survived by his sister Mali, sister-in-law Bobbie, and eleven nieces and nephews. His family has not yet disclosed his cause of death.

A funeral service to celebrate his life is scheduled for February 6 at St. Brendan's Church. The legacy of Jim Vargas, defined by award-winning journalism, mentorship, and deep camaraderie, leaves a lasting mark on the industry and those who knew him.
