The BBC has officially announced that the beloved cosy crime drama Death in Paradise will be temporarily replaced in its prime-time slot this week, with not one but two popular programmes taking its place. This move comes after the conclusion of Death in Paradise series 15 last week, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the Christmas special in December.
Friday Night Lineup Revealed
This Friday, April 3, will see a dynamic double bill on BBC One, starting at 9pm with the return of the long-running satirical news quiz, Have I Got News For You. The show will be presented by actor and comedian Roy Wood Jr, who will be joined by satirist and writer Armando Iannucci, journalist Anushka Asthana, and the iconic team captains, journalist Ian Hislop and comedian Paul Merton.
Comedy Drama Makes Its Debut
Following immediately at 9.30pm, which would typically be the midpoint of a new Death in Paradise episode, viewers will be treated to the premiere of The Young Offenders season five. This Irish comedy-drama, adapted from the 2016 film of the same name, follows the hilarious misadventures of teenagers Conor MacSweeney, played by Alex Murphy, and Jock O'Keeffee, portrayed by Chris Walley, as they navigate petty crimes and unexpected romances.
The series was originally inspired by real-life events, specifically one of the largest cocaine seizures in Irish history in 2007, when a small vessel encountered difficulties off the coast of Cork, leading to the recovery of a staggering 1.5 tonnes of cocaine from the sea.
Fan Reactions and Acclaim
Since its premiere in 2018, The Young Offenders has garnered widespread praise from audiences, with many hailing it as a standout in Irish comedy. One enthusiastic viewer described it as "Irish comedy at its finest," while another remarked, "An absolute gem. I loved the film but this is far better."
Additional comments from fans include labeling the show "utter genius" and stating, "The best Irish comedy since Father Ted. It's a must-see." Others noted its binge-worthy appeal, with one saying, "Hard not to binge! Every episode had me in stitches," and another adding, "I'm not usually one for comedy but this show is gold."
Have I Got News For You returns on Friday, April 3, at 9pm, and The Young Offenders season five premieres at 9.30pm on BBC One, offering viewers a fresh and entertaining alternative to the usual cosy crime drama fare.
