Fans of the cherished BBC drama Call the Midwife have been eagerly speculating about the show's return following its emotional season fifteen finale. The series, which has captivated audiences since its 2012 debut with poignant narratives of childbirth, social challenges, poverty, medical progress, and severe health issues, is set to expand with new content, including a highly anticipated prequel.
What is the Call the Midwife Prequel About?
The BBC has reassured viewers that Call the Midwife will remain a cornerstone of its programming for the foreseeable future. In an official statement, the broadcaster announced upcoming projects: two Christmas specials, a new series, a feature film, and a prequel series, leading into a sixteenth season. The prequel, created by writer Heidi Thomas, will transport audiences to Poplar during the London Blitz, delving into a period earlier than the show's original 1957 to 1971 timeline.
Returning Legends and New Characters
The prequel will feature younger incarnations of three iconic nuns: Sister Julienne, Sister Monica Joan, and Sister Evangelina, originally portrayed by Jenny Agutter, Judy Parfitt, and Pam Ferris. This marks a notable return for Sister Evangelina, who last appeared in the main series after her character's death in season five. These familiar figures will be joined by three new young midwives arriving in the East End, adding fresh dynamics to the storyline.
Heidi Thomas explained to Radio Times that the series focuses on strong women navigating a world where they lack control, as men are away at war. She described the era as extraordinary—filled with loss, togetherness, courage, and joy, highlighting its thematic connections to recent seasons. Thomas also noted that while she has never exhausted stories for the midwives, she felt a desire to explore this deeper historical past.
Production and Air Date Speculation
The prequel is scheduled for production in 2026, with executive producer Pippa Harris indicating a debut during the festive period. However, the BBC has not yet confirmed an exact air date. Additionally, a Call the Midwife film set overseas in 1972, featuring characters from the TV show, is in the works, though release details remain unannounced.
This expansion comes after season fifteen concluded with the death of Sister Monica Joan, set in 1971, which left fans emotional. The series, based on Jennifer Worth's memoirs, follows nurse-midwives and Anglican nuns in London's East End, dedicated to caring for women and families in impoverished communities amidst NHS changes and medical advancements.
