Coronation Street Episode Leaves Fans in Tears as Grooming Scandal Unfolds
Coronation Street fans were left on the verge of tears after Wednesday night's dramatic episode, which saw various truths emerge about the illicit relationship between schoolteacher Megan Walsh and her student Will Driscoll. The world's longest-running TV soap has been airing this grooming storyline for months, and the plot is now reaching a critical climax.
Shocking Revelations and Family Turmoil
Megan Walsh, portrayed by Beth Nixon, has been carrying out an illicit affair with Will Driscoll, with heavy implications that it began long before his sixteenth birthday. While this was happening, Megan started a fake relationship with Daniel Osbourne, played by Rob Mallard, despite being pregnant with Will's baby. Will's schoolmate Sam, who is in the year below, was the only one to suspect the truth, but after Megan threatened him, he turned to pills to cope and experienced an overdose.
Will initially tried to dismiss the allegations as a simple crush, but his family still reported the matter to the police. This led to him confessing the truth to his stepmother Leanne, played by Jane Danson, and his aunt Eva Price, portrayed by Catherine Tyldesley, who is in a relationship with Will's father Ben. The two women, along with their sister Toyah, gave Megan a chance to explain herself, but they quickly realized she was lying and took action.
Emotional Confrontations and Police Intervention
In Wednesday's episode, Eva nervously waited to inform Ben, who had been out celebrating St Patrick's Day. After she tentatively broke the news, Ben was almost in tears, expressing his shock and anger: "Will's just a wee boy... My boy... And we invited her into his life! Athletics coach... She'll be laughing herself stupid. Was this going on in Hull?" Viewers know the affair predates their move to Weatherfield, but Eva admitted they would have to uncover the full truth themselves.
Ben then tried to coax the truth from Will, who claimed to have had a crush on Megan and that she rejected his advances—a lie Ben initially believed. However, suspicions grew as barmaid Lauren Bolton cornered Will's brother Ollie, revealing she suspected something months ago. Back at school, Megan instructed Will to pack a bag before Daniel arrived, but Ben, Eva, and Leanne headed to the police station to report her. The police arrested Megan on the spot in the school corridor, shocking Daniel.
Family Fallout and Viewer Reactions
Sam was informed he might need to give evidence in court, a prospect that frightened the shy schoolboy, but he vowed to proceed. DC Kit Green told the Driscolls that Megan was in custody overnight, leading to a blazing row among family members as they blamed each other, with Will weeping on the stairs.
Viewers reacted strongly to the episode, with one fan declaring on X: "#Corrie made my blood run cold!" Another expressed frustration with the half-hour format, saying: "it’s times like these i miss hour long episodes #corrie that scene where ben finds out nearly caused tears. there’s not enough in the 30minutes to really unravel it i need to wait now to get the second half!" A third predicted: "megan’s going to try to 'dump' will and run just like what she did with that other boy. the one who chased her 3 postcodes for an explanation!"
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
