Disney Officially Commences Production on Frozen 3 with 2027 Release Date Announced
Disney has officially begun production on the highly anticipated third instalment of its globally successful Frozen franchise, with voice actor Josh Gad sharing behind-the-scenes photographs confirming the news. The cinematic release date has been revealed as November 24, 2027, marking almost a full decade since the previous film, Frozen 2, premiered in 2019.
Behind-the-Scenes Confirmation from Olaf Star Josh Gad
Josh Gad, who provides the voice for the beloved snowman Olaf, posted a photograph onto social media showing himself with co-directors Jennifer Lee and Trent Correy, alongside producer Christina Chen. In the image, the team holds up three fingers while posing with an Olaf toy, symbolising the third film in the series. Gad captioned the post: "3rd time is always the charm. Time to build another snowman."
The entertainment outlet DiscussingFilm also shared a post on X, stating: "Josh Gad has begun voice recording for 'FROZEN 3'", accompanied by a snap of the actor behind the scenes. This confirmation follows months of speculation from fans eagerly awaiting news about the continuation of the franchise.
Return of the Original Cast and Creative Team
The Frozen series, originally inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale The Snow Queen, has grown into a multi-million dollar global phenomenon since the first film's release in 2013. The franchise is celebrated for its original musical scores by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, featuring iconic songs like Let It Go, which won an Academy Award.
Broadway star Idina Menzel is set to reprise her role as Queen Elsa of Arendelle, the monarch with magical ice powers, while Kristen Bell returns as her sister Anna. Jonathan Groff will also return as Kristoff. The core creative team, including directors Jennifer Lee and Trent Correy, remains involved, ensuring continuity with the previous films.
Anticipation Builds for the Third Chapter
In a recent interview with Collider towards the end of last year, Josh Gad teased that while recording had not yet commenced at that time, the project would be "worth the wait" for fans. He elaborated: "We have not started recording. We have not heard songs yet. I was lucky enough to get sort of a preview of what the movie is, and it's going to be worth the wait. It's pretty extraordinary what they're doing."
Gad emphasised the importance of having a compelling story to justify a sequel, praising Jennifer Lee for creating a narrative that meets this criterion. The franchise has already expanded beyond cinema, with successful stage musical adaptations in both London and on Broadway, several short films, and television specials, all contributing to its enduring popularity.
Looking Ahead: Frozen 4 Already in the Pipeline
In addition to the confirmation of Frozen 3, reports indicate that a fourth film in the series is expected to be released the following year, suggesting Disney's long-term commitment to expanding the Frozen universe. This strategic move aligns with the corporation's history of developing beloved franchises into sustained entertainment properties.
As production officially gets underway, fans worldwide can now mark their calendars for November 2027, when Elsa, Anna, Olaf, and Kristoff will return to the big screen for another magical adventure set in the wintery kingdom of Arendelle.
