In a dramatic turn of events on the latest episode of Dom Chinea's Cornish Workshop, the beloved The Repair Shop star Dom Chinea was dealt a massive blow that left him utterly stunned. The episode, which aired recently, featured Dom embarking on a new adventure in drift car racing, only for it to end in a disappointing crash mere minutes into the competition.
Dom Chinea's Cornish Adventure Takes a Risky Turn
Dom Chinea, along with his wife Maria and their dog Wendy, has been documenting his move from the hectic commuter life of Kent to the rugged and scenic landscapes of West Cornwall. The series captures his journey as he forges a new existence, embracing fresh challenges and experiences in this picturesque region. In this particular instalment, Dom decided to step far outside his comfort zone by delving into the world of drift car racing, a pursuit he had never attempted before.
Building and Preparing the Drift Car
Teaming up with engineer Sam Lovegrove, Dom set out to construct a drift car from scratch. The process began when Sam emailed Dom a link to a Mazda MX5 for sale, aptly titled 'Let's Go Drifting'. Despite feeling a wave of fear, Dom expressed his willingness to try new things, stating, "I've moved down here, moved down to Cornwall, willing to try new things. Drifting is something I have never done, never tried, and no experience in. But I would actually quite like to give it a go."
The pair inspected and purchased the Mazda MX5, then embarked on a restoration project to prepare it for racing. This involved significant modifications, including installing a hydraulic handbrake and ensuring the rear wheels could spin in unison. However, they encountered challenges, such as dealing with rust on the underside of the vehicle, which made the task more complex than anticipated.
The Drift Competition and Unexpected Crash
Once the car was ready, Dom and Sam entered it into a drift racing competition. Dom admitted feeling out of his depth, remarking, "This is not my world at all. It just goes to show being into cars is a very broad category, and this is something I've never experienced before. I am, to say I'm out of my depth here, is an understatement." In drift competitions, points are awarded based on how well drivers control their skids around corners, focusing on speed and style rather than simply crossing the finish line first.
Tragically, just minutes into the race, their vehicle, which they had nicknamed 'Phoenix', veered off the track and collided with a barrier. Dom explained in a video segment, "With our modifications, we're confident our Phoenix is going to fly. The steering, the cornering, the suspension, all working together in perfect harmony. Until it didn't." Exiting the car, Sam joked, "That didn't go so well!" to which Dom responded in disbelief, "Seriously? I didn't even get a go. Are you kidding me? After all that work?" Sam noted that the car could likely be repaired, but not in time to continue racing that day.
Reflecting on the Experience
Despite the setback, Dom maintained a sense of humour about the incident. In another video clip, he quipped, "Well, we wanted our car to make an impact", before adding, "We started this crazy adventure in the hope we'd meet like-minded petrolheads. I'd say this was mission accomplished." This light-hearted take highlights Dom's resilient spirit and his commitment to embracing new challenges, even when they don't go as planned.
Discussing the episode beforehand, Dom had revealed, "Sam showed me a Mazda MX5 for sale that we could fix up to try drift racing - something I've never done." He elaborated on the technical adjustments required, emphasising the learning curve involved in this unfamiliar territory.
Dom Chinea's Cornish Workshop continues to showcase Dom's journey in Cornwall, blending personal anecdotes with hands-on projects. The series is available for viewing on U and Channel 4, offering audiences a glimpse into his life beyond The Repair Shop. This episode serves as a reminder that venturing into new hobbies can come with unexpected hurdles, but it's all part of the adventure.
