Downton Abbey Talent Lands Major Roles in Netflix's New Eloise Adaptation
Streaming giant Netflix has unveiled an impressive ensemble cast for its forthcoming film adaptation of the beloved Eloise book series, with several prominent British actors from acclaimed television programmes joining the project. The production, which is being spearheaded by Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, represents a significant live-action interpretation of Kay Thompson's cherished children's literature.
Prestigious Cast Adds Star Power to Classic Story
The newly announced cast members bring considerable pedigree to the Netflix production. Acclaimed British actress Sally Hawkins, recognised for her memorable performances in Paddington, The Shape of Water and Made in Dagenham, has joined the ensemble. She will be accompanied by David Haig, whose extensive credits include both Four Weddings and a Funeral and the period drama Downton Abbey, alongside television appearances in Killing Eve and Midsomer Murders.
Further strengthening the cast are Victor Garber, whose filmography spans major pictures including Legally Blonde, Argo and Titanic, and Max Casella, known for appearances in Inside Llewyn David, Blue Jasmine and television series The Sopranos. Young actor Isaac Bae completes the lineup, bringing experience from children's programming including Toddle Tots and Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.
Fresh Take on Generational Favourite
Netflix's Head of Feature Animation and Family Film, Hannah Minghella, has promised audiences a completely fresh interpretation of Eloise's story while honouring the character's enduring legacy. "Eloise has been beloved for generations, from when she was first published in the 1950s through to today," Minghella explained. "It's an honor to reintroduce this cherished character to the world with two people who share her signature mischief and charm - Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds - in this bold, hilarious, and heartfelt new family film."
The production represents a collaboration between independent company MRC, which secured the Eloise rights in 2019, and the Thompson estate, illustrator Hilary Knight, and publisher Simon & Schuster. MRC Film co-presidents Jonathan Golfman and Brye Adler expressed their enthusiasm for bringing the cherished children's property to global audiences through this partnership with Maximum Effort, Sherman-Palladino, and Netflix.
Established Talent Meets New Interpretation
Netflix had previously confirmed that Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds would feature in the production, while young performer Mae Schenk has secured the title role of Eloise. The streaming service's adaptation aims to introduce Thompson's iconic character, originally illustrated by Hilary Knight, to contemporary audiences while maintaining the spirit that has made the books a multi-generational favourite since their debut in the 1950s.
While specific plot details remain closely guarded, the involvement of Sherman-Palladino suggests the film will blend the creator's signature witty dialogue and character-driven storytelling with the mischievous charm of the original Eloise books. The project is currently in production, with Netflix yet to announce an official release date for this highly anticipated family film adaptation.
