EastEnders has announced a major comeback for two beloved stars, as Gemma Bissix and Jon Lee are set to return to Albert Square. The news follows the emotional departure of Nigel Bates, whose dementia storyline has reached its conclusion.
Gemma Bissix Returns as Clare Bates
Gemma Bissix, who originally played Clare Bates on the BBC soap, made a brief return earlier this year as part of Nigel's dementia storyline. Now, she will be back once more to attend Nigel's funeral. Reflecting on her return, Gemma said: "When I returned earlier this year, we always knew Clare had to come back for Nigel’s funeral. He meant so much to her, and it felt right to be there for the conclusion of his story, as everyone came together to say their final goodbyes."
Jon Lee Reprises Role as Josh Saunders
Jon Lee, best known as a member of S Club, played the role of Josh Saunders in the 1990s before finding fame with the pop group. He is now making a comeback alongside Gemma in a joint guest appearance, reuniting him with his on-screen mother Julie Bates, played by Karen Henthorn. Jon shared his excitement: "It was quite surreal stepping back on to Albert Square after so many years as it’s so familiar to so many of us. It was lovely to see my onscreen family again."
The episode featuring their return is set to air on 20th May 2026. Fans can expect an emotional send-off for Nigel Bates as his story reaches its poignant end.
