Emma Stone has carved her name into Oscars history, achieving a remarkable milestone that places her among Hollywood's elite. On Thursday, the acclaimed actress received two prestigious Academy Award nominations for her dual roles as producer and star in the film Bugonia. This achievement has propelled her to a new record, making her the youngest woman ever to accumulate seven Oscar nominations throughout her career.
A Historic Achievement at 37
At 37 years old, the Superbad alumna has now officially dethroned the legendary Meryl Streep, who was 38 when she earned her seventh nomination for Ironweed back in 1988. While Stone now holds the title of youngest woman to reach this milestone, she remains the second-youngest person overall to score seven nominations, following the late Walt Disney.
Stone's journey to this historic moment has been marked by consistent excellence. Her previous Oscar wins include Best Actress for La La Land in 2017 and Poor Things in 2024. In contrast, Streep, now 76, has amassed an astonishing 21 total nominations with three wins: Best Supporting Actress for Kramer vs. Kramer in 1980, and Best Actress for Sophie's Choice in 1983 and The Iron Lady in 2012.
Transformative Role in Bugonia
For her latest nominated performance, Stone underwent a dramatic physical transformation, shaving her head on camera to portray the ruthless pharmaceutical CEO Michelle Fuller in Yorgos Lanthimos' black comedy Bugonia. This bold move places her in the company of other actresses who have made similar sacrifices for their art, including Sigourney Weaver, Demi Moore, and Natalie Portman.
Reflecting on the demands of her recent roles, Stone told the LA Times: "A lot of these stories require a fair amount emotionally but also physically. All three [characters] are extremely isolated in different ways, whether it's Michelle's big house and being alone as CEO of this company, or the very different socioeconomic background of Teddy and Don and how their isolation can breed more extreme viewpoints, and vice versa."
Fierce Competition Ahead
When the 98th Academy Awards air on March 15 on ABC and Hulu, Stone will face formidable competition in the Best Actress category. Frontrunner Jessie Buckley from Hamnet leads the pack of contenders that also includes Renate Reinsve, Rose Byrne, and Kate Hudson.
Beyond Stone's personal nominations, Bugonia has received additional recognition with Will Tracy nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Jerskin Fendrix for Best Original Score. The film joins a prestigious lineup of Best Picture nominees that includes F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, and Sinners, with the latter earning a record-breaking 16 nominations.
Upcoming Projects and Personal Milestones
Before the Oscars ceremony, Stone will first compete at the newly renamed 32nd Actor Awards on March 1, where she's nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. The ceremony will air on Netflix.
On a personal note, Stone and her husband of five years, Saturday Night Live writer Dave McCary, will celebrate their daughter Louise Jean's fifth birthday on March 13. The inseparable couple co-founded their production company Fruit Tree in 2020 and have several exciting projects in development, including a Miss Piggy movie with Jennifer Lawrence and an untitled musical comedy directed by Jesse Eisenberg.
Meanwhile, Meryl Streep continues her illustrious career with several high-profile projects. She will reprise her iconic role as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada 2, scheduled for release on May 1, and return for the sixth season of Hulu's Only Murders in the Building. Streep has also signed on to star in Joseph Cedar's oligarch thriller Useful Idiots alongside Sigourney Weaver.
Stone's additional upcoming work includes voicing the Insect Queen in the animated body-swap comedy Hoppers, set for release on March 6, featuring a voice cast that includes Jon Hamm, Dave Franco, Ego Nwodim, and Heidi Klum.
