Emmerdale Star's Real Voice Leaves Viewers Astonished
Andrew Scarborough, the actor behind Emmerdale's enigmatic Graham Foster, has revealed his authentic speaking voice – and it's strikingly different from the character's signature deep tones that have captivated ITV soap audiences for years.
A Decade on the Dales
Scarborough first joined the cast of the long-running Yorkshire-based drama in 2017, quickly establishing Graham Foster as a complex figure who brought significant drama to the village. His character's journey took a dramatic turn in 2020 when he was apparently killed by Pierce Harris, the abusive former husband of Rhona Goskirk, with whom Graham had recently begun a relationship.
However, in a stunning twist that aired in January of this year, viewers discovered Graham had actually survived the attack and had been living discreetly away from the public eye for several years.
Frosty Returns and Family Dynamics
Upon his unexpected return to Emmerdale, Graham received a decidedly cool welcome from several villagers, including his former partner Kim Tate, Rhona Goskirk, and Joe Tate – the young man Graham had served as legal guardian and father figure to during earlier storylines.
Although initially shocked, Joe eventually warmed to Graham's reappearance and extended an invitation for him to stay at Home Farm. In an effort to maintain family harmony, Kim reluctantly agreed to Graham moving back into the farmhouse, recognising the importance of Joe's happiness.
Fan Adoration for Graham's Voice
Graham's comeback has been met with considerable enthusiasm from the soap's dedicated fanbase, with many expressing particular admiration for the character's vocal qualities. Social media has been filled with comments praising his "sexy voice" and "smooth deep tones," establishing Graham's voice as one of his most distinctive characteristics.
The Real Andrew Scarborough
In reality, the actor sounds markedly different from his on-screen persona. Hailing from Harrogate in North Yorkshire, Scarborough possesses what has been described as a "slight Northern twang" – a far cry from Graham's cultivated, resonant delivery.
This contrast became particularly evident during a 2018 interview on ITV's Lorraine programme, where Scarborough discussed his role on the soap while speaking in his natural accent.
Secrets and Surprises
Reflecting on Graham's dramatic resurrection and return to the show, Scarborough admitted: "I never expected it at all. Although saying that I did think that Graham always had a possibility of coming back."
Regarding the challenge of keeping his comeback under wraps, the 52-year-old actor confessed: "Oh yes it's been a big secret and I kept it mostly quiet from my family, which was tricky."
He further revealed the limited circle who were aware of the plot development, noting: "Oh yes just a limited few certainly it is on one hand, in fact I had some cousins who contacted me after it was shown, saying you sod."
Emmerdale continues to air Monday through Friday at 8:00pm on ITV1 and the ITVX streaming platform, with Graham Foster's ongoing storyline keeping viewers engaged and his distinctive voice continuing to be a topic of conversation among the show's passionate audience.
