Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry has revealed she has 'never felt more seen' in her career than while working on her latest film project. The Hollywood icon made the heartfelt admission during promotional appearances for the upcoming crime thriller Crime 101, where she stars alongside Chris Hemsworth.
A Transformative Working Experience
Speaking on The Graham Norton Show alongside her co-star Chris Hemsworth, the 59-year-old actress described the working environment on the new film as exceptional. 'It was amazing,' Berry declared. 'When you've been doing this for over 30 years and you say it is the all-time best, that's something significant.'
The Oscar winner contrasted her positive experience on Crime 101 with broader industry challenges. 'You hear about the horror stories that go on in the industry, but not at all here,' she explained. 'I have never felt more seen, protected and stood up for as I did on this movie.'
Connecting With Her Character
Berry found particular resonance with her character in the film, describing meaningful parallels with her own experiences. Speaking to host Graham Norton, she elaborated: 'She stands up for all women in middle life. She has a voice. I think that has been a long time coming.'
The actress believes this representation will resonate widely. 'Many women who are down the path of life like I am will feel very happy to be seen,' she added, highlighting the importance of authentic representation for women in their later careers.
Historic Oscar Win Revisited
When questioned by Norton about her groundbreaking 2002 Oscar win for Best Actress, Berry described the moment as surreal. 'That night I had an out of body experience,' she recalled. 'I didn't think I would win so didn't write a speech and I was in utter shock and disbelief.'
The actress remains the only woman of colour to have won the Best Actress Oscar, having triumphed over fellow nominees Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Renée Zellweger and Sissy Spacek. 'It was only an hour later that it sunk in,' she remembered, 'and I couldn't stop telling people, "I won an Oscar!"'
Co-star's Perspective On The Film
Chris Hemsworth, who stars alongside Berry in the crime thriller, offered his own perspective on the project. The 42-year-old actor described Crime 101 as 'sleek and sexy' with complex characters that elevate the material.
'It is a throwback to the 70s, 80s and 90s heist movies that we all love,' Hemsworth explained, 'with a contemporary feel. There are complex characters and a deep level of emotion, and it's entertaining, sleek, sexy, and visually pretty stunning.'
The Australian actor didn't hesitate to praise the quality of the screenplay. 'It was the best script I had read in years,' he revealed, indicating the strong foundation that attracted both lead actors to the project.
Additional Guests Share Stories
The Graham Norton episode featured additional celebrity guests who shared their own entertainment industry anecdotes. Canadian actress Rachel McAdams, 47, reflected on her iconic role as Regina George in Mean Girls and the character's lasting impact.
'I didn't know how hated she would be and for how long,' McAdams admitted. 'The first time I saw the film with an audience I was with my best friend. Everyone cheered when Regina was hit by a bus, but my friend stood up and screamed, "Nooooo!"'
Comedian's Cinematic Portrayal
Comedian John Bishop, 59, discussed the unusual experience of having a film based on his life. 'It's really weird and strange,' he confessed about Is This Thing On?, the movie inspired by his experiences.
'I wanted to be part of the writing process, but I was too close to the story, so I had to step away,' Bishop explained. 'I'm so glad I did. There was a big portion of trust involved, but the end result is brilliant. It really is a lovely film.'
The comedian humorously addressed not being asked for a cameo appearance. 'I don't think a film by Bradley Cooper is going to be made better by me being in it,' he joked, referencing the film's director.
The full interview with Halle Berry, Chris Hemsworth, Rachel McAdams and John Bishop airs on The Graham Norton Show on BBC One and iPlayer on Friday 30th January at 10.40pm.
