Comedian and writer Lee Mack has opened up about his intentions for concluding his beloved BBC sitcom Not Going Out, revealing a preference for a subtle, understated ending rather than a grand television finale.
A Long-Running Comedy Legacy
Mack, 57, has been the creative force behind Not Going Out since its debut in 2006, co-writing and starring in the series across 14 successful seasons. The show is confirmed to return for a 15th series on BBC One later this year, continuing its remarkable run as one of Britain's most enduring sitcoms.
"Fizzle Away Slowly": Mack's Finale Philosophy
In a recent interview with The Mirror, Mack addressed the inevitable question of how the series might eventually conclude. "I think if we ever ended it we'd just fizzle away slowly, that's how I'd like to do it," he explained. "Maybe you do a Christmas special and then another one and before you know it you're not on anymore."
Mack emphasized his desire to avoid the conventional approach to crafting a dramatic final episode. "We didn't make a big fanfare about starting. I think we'll just do the last episode and then we're talk about whether we want to do anymore, maybe they won't want any, and maybe we won't want any."
Learning from Gavin & Stacey's Approach
The comedian drew comparisons to another beloved British sitcom, Gavin & Stacey, created by James Corden and Ruth Jones. That series concluded after three seasons but returned years later for Christmas specials in 2019 and 2024.
"Only having to write an episode once every 10 years, yes that appeals to me, a lot!" Mack said with characteristic humor. "I will be doing a Corden and Jones, having 10 years off you've got a long old time to write those jokes. That's what I'd be doing."
The Evolution of Not Going Out
The series has undergone significant transformations throughout its lengthy run. In the most recent series, Mack and Sally Bretton remained as the only credited main cast members, with their characters Lee and Lucy relocating to a new countryside home.
Despite these changes, the show has maintained its popularity and comedic appeal. Mack confirmed that for now, the focus remains on continuing production. "For now, we're definitely doing the next two series so we'll see how it goes."
Return Date Confirmed
Fans can look forward to new episodes when Not Going Out returns to BBC One in June 2026. The upcoming 15th series promises to deliver more of the witty humor and relatable situations that have made the show a staple of British television comedy for nearly two decades.
