Reality television star Maura Higgins is set to make her cinematic debut as her first feature film, The Spin, premieres in UK cinemas later this month. The 35-year-old former Love Island contestant appears alongside Pussycat Dolls singer Kimberly Wyatt in this charming Irish comedy.
From Reality TV to the Big Screen
New promotional images from the film showcase Maura Higgins in two distinct looks. In one scene, she wears a striking red low-cut top while engaged in a phone call. Another snapshot captures her at a bar, dressed in a silver top and classic blue jeans, highlighting her transition from television personality to film actress.
A Heartwarming Irish Story
The Spin follows the story of Dermot, played by Brenock O'Connor, and Elvis, portrayed by Owen Colgan. These two music enthusiasts operate a struggling record shop in Omagh, Northern Ireland. Faced with an unpaid rent bill and a formidable landlord, Sadie, played by Derry Girls star Tara Lynne O'Neill, who is eager to evict them, the duo discovers a potentially life-changing opportunity.
They learn of rare, vintage records by blues legend Robert Johnson available for sale in Cork at a remarkably low price. With just two days to reach the other end of Ireland, they embark on a journey in a rusty Vauxhall, meeting various locals and forming new friendships along the way. Their mission is simple: acquire the rare vinyl to save their beloved shop.
Maura Higgins on Her Acting Debut
Speaking about her role in the film, Maura Higgins expressed her enthusiasm for joining an Irish production. 'The Irish are known for our storytelling, so it felt fitting that my acting debut would be in an Irish film,' she said. 'Being on set was an incredible experience, and I enjoyed every moment! I play the character of Rose, the girlfriend of Dermot, a down-on-his-luck record store owner.'
Despite her comfort in front of cameras, Higgins admitted to initial nerves. 'Although I am comfortable in front of the camera, it did still feel nerve-wracking at first, but chatting with the brilliant cast and crew helped me relax,' she added.
Director's Vision
Director Michael Head described The Spin as a feel-good buddy movie that maintains a light-hearted tone. 'The Spin is a feel good buddy movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. I hope everyone enjoys watching as much as we enjoyed making it,' he commented, emphasising the film's entertaining and uplifting nature.
Addressing Romance Rumours
This film release follows recent speculation about Maura Higgins' personal life, particularly rumours of a romance with her co-star on The Traitors US. Fans have noted apparent chemistry between Higgins and fellow player Rob Rauch, leading to widespread discussion on social media platforms like TikTok.
During an appearance on Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live, Higgins was questioned about these rumours. When asked about the possibility of a relationship with Rauch, she responded coyly, 'I mean, you'll have to watch the show to see if that happened,' leaving the outcome to viewers' imagination.
Release Details
The Spin is scheduled for release in UK and Irish cinemas on February 27, offering audiences a delightful blend of comedy, music, and Irish charm. This marks a significant step in Maura Higgins' career as she ventures into the world of acting beyond reality television.
