EastEnders actress Michelle Ryan has shared a moving and heartfelt tribute following the death of her former co-star Derek Martin, who passed away at the age of 92.
A Fond Farewell from a Screen Granddaughter
Martin, best known for playing the beloved London cabbie and family patriarch Charlie Slater on the BBC One soap, died on Saturday, 10th January 2026. Ryan, who played his on-screen granddaughter Zoe Slater, took to Instagram on Monday to express her sorrow.
The 41-year-old actress wrote about Martin's friendly nature and the practical advice he offered behind the scenes. "He was such a friendly man, always ready with a story and practical advice, for example how weak tea is good for shock," Ryan recalled in her post, sending her condolences to his family and friends.
A Legacy on the Square and Beyond
Derek Martin's portrayal of Charlie Slater began in 2000 and became a cornerstone of one of Albert Square's most iconic families, the Slaters. His character was initially introduced as the father of Zoe, before a legendary plot twist revealed that Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) was her mother, making Charlie her grandfather.
Martin remained a full-time fixture on EastEnders until 2011, with occasional returns in later years. His career, however, spanned over five decades. Before finding fame in Walford, he worked as a stuntman on Doctor Who and appeared in series such as The Bill, Only Fools and Horses, and Little Britain.
Tributes from Co-stars and the BBC
Fans and colleagues have been quick to honour the actor's memory. In an official statement, a spokesperson for EastEnders said: "We are deeply saddened... Derek was deeply loved by all those that worked with him at EastEnders and will always be remembered with great fondness."
His family, in a statement released by his agent, described him as "a devoted father" and "an all-around good man." They highlighted his generosity as a member of the charitable Water Rats and his passion for golf.
Michelle Ryan, who made a dramatic return to EastEnders in 2025 after two decades away, was supported by her followers in the comments of her tribute, with many sharing their own fond memories of the actor and his legendary character.
