Odessa A'zion Exits A24 Film Deep Cuts Amid Casting Controversy
Odessa A'zion Leaves A24 Movie After Casting Backlash

Odessa A'zion, known for her breakout role in Marty Supreme, has stepped down from the upcoming A24 film Deep Cuts after facing significant backlash from fans over her casting. The controversy erupted when it was revealed that A'zion was cast as Zoe Gutierrez, a character of Mexican heritage in Holly Brickley's 2021 novel adaptation, despite not sharing that background.

Fan Outcry Leads to Swift Exit

Following the announcement of her casting earlier this week, fans of the book quickly voiced their concerns on social media, highlighting the mismatch between the actor and the character's ethnic identity. In response, A'zion took to her Instagram Stories late Wednesday to announce her departure from the project.

The 25-year-old actor explained that she was not aware of Zoe's heritage before accepting the role, stating, "Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie." She expressed gratitude to her fans for bringing the issue to her attention and emphasised her commitment to ethical casting practices.

A'zion's Candid Response

In her social media posts, A'zion detailed how she initially auditioned for a different role, Percy, but was offered the part of Zoe instead. She admitted, "I'm so pissed y'all, I hadn't read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting." She firmly declared her exit, adding, "F*** that. I'm out! I'd never take a role from someone else that's meant to do it."

Her recent Instagram posts have been flooded with comments from critics accusing her of taking opportunities away from Mexican artists. In a post shared last week, A'zion reiterated her stance, encouraging followers to check her story for updates.

Background on Deep Cuts Production

Deep Cuts, directed by Sean Durkin, is an adaptation of Brickley's novel and stars Drew Starkey and Cailee Spaeny as music-obsessed twenty-somethings navigating ambition and adulthood over a decade. The film was originally set to feature Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler in lead roles, but both actors dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.

The production is backed by a team including producers Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein, Josh Safdie, Anthony Katagas, Jordan Tappis, and A24, with Brickley serving as an executive producer. Zoe's character is Percy's ex in the storyline.

This incident highlights ongoing debates in Hollywood about representation and casting authenticity, as the industry faces increasing scrutiny over diversity issues. A'zion's decision to withdraw underscores a growing trend where actors and production teams are more responsive to fan feedback and cultural sensitivities.
