Major TV Channel Changes Announced for Sky and Virgin Media in February

Sky and Virgin Media are set to implement seven significant channel alterations throughout February, marking a substantial shift in their broadcasting line-ups. Two prominent entertainment channels will be permanently discontinued, while several others will undergo temporary rebrands as part of this comprehensive restructuring.

Permanent Closures and the Return of Sky One

Sky Showcase and Sky Max will both cease operations permanently in February, making way for the highly anticipated return of Sky One. The revamped Sky One channel is scheduled to launch on channel 106 from Tuesday, 24th February, positioning itself as the central hub for Sky's comedy and entertainment programming.

Carli Kerr, Managing Director of Sky TV and NOW, emphasized the strategic rationale behind these changes. "Our goal is to make it easier than ever for Sky TV customers to find and enjoy the shows they love," she stated. "Building on the iconic heritage of Sky One, the channel will be a one-of-a-kind destination that's big, bold and bursting with energy."

New Programming and Temporary Channel Rebrands

The resurrected Sky One will feature an array of fresh content, including new Sky Originals such as The Dyers' Caravan Park and Gemma Collins: Four Weddings and a Baby. Returning favourites like Rob and Romesh Vs. will also be showcased, alongside the highly anticipated launch of Saturday Night Live UK later this year.

In addition to the permanent changes, five temporary channel rebrands will take effect throughout February:

  • Nick SpongeBob (Satellite 605 / Sky Glass 206) will revert to its original name, Nicktoons.
  • Sky Feel Good (Satellite 302 / Sky Glass 302) will temporarily become SkyValentineHD.
  • Sky Comedy (Satellite 308 / Sky Glass 308) will undergo a temporary name change to Groundhog Day HD.
  • Sky Spider-Man (Satellite 307 / Sky Glass 307) will return to its former designation, Sky Action HD.
  • On Tuesday, 3rd February, Groundhog Day (Satellite 308 / Sky Glass 308) will revert back to Sky Comedy HD.

Implementation Timeline and Viewer Impact

The channel modifications will commence from Monday, 2nd February, with the temporary rebrands taking effect first. Later in the month, the permanent closures of Sky Showcase and Sky Max will be executed, culminating in the relaunch of Sky One on 24th February.

Sky asserts that these comprehensive changes are designed to streamline the viewing experience and enhance accessibility for subscribers. By consolidating comedy and entertainment offerings under the revitalized Sky One banner, the broadcaster aims to create a more intuitive and engaging platform for audiences seeking premium content.

Viewers are advised to consult their electronic programme guides for specific channel numbers and updates as these transitions unfold throughout February. The alterations represent one of the most significant broadcasting reorganizations in recent years, reflecting evolving viewer preferences and strategic content distribution priorities within the competitive UK television landscape.
