Virgin River Fans Concerned Over Preacher's Future After Season 7 Plot Twist
Virgin River enthusiasts have been left anxiously speculating about whether Preacher, portrayed by Colin Lawrence, might be departing the cherished Netflix drama. The seventh season of the immensely popular romance series premiered on the streaming platform last Thursday, March 12th, and has swiftly ignited fervent discussions among viewers due to its latest narrative developments.
Season 7 Unfolds with Major Character Arcs
As Mel Monroe, played by Alexandra Breckenridge, and Jack Sheridan, portrayed by Martin Henderson, navigate the complexities of married life, a proposal from Mel's pregnant patient Marley, enacted by Rachel Drance, introduces both exhilarating and daunting prospects. Meanwhile, Vernon 'Doc' Mullins, brought to life by Tim Matheson, confronts a formidable battle with the medical board following the suspension of his license, while Brady, played by Ben Hollingsworth, and Brie, portrayed by Zibby Allen, find themselves irresistibly drawn back into each other's orbits.
In a parallel storyline, Jack's closest confidant Preacher grapples with a pivotal decision after a profound realisation about his career aspirations, as reported by the Express. Having discovered a passion for the hospitality industry while overseeing the bar's new menu, by the season's conclusion, he contemplates dissolving his partnership with Jack to launch his own restaurant venture.
Showrunner Provides Clarity on Preacher's Status
The finale left Preacher in a state of uncertainty, weighing whether to sign a buyout agreement that would facilitate his departure and independent journey. This plot twist has triggered alarm bells among dedicated Virgin River fans, who fear Preacher might ultimately exit the series if he opts to establish his eatery beyond the town's confines. However, in an interview with Deadline, producer and showrunner Patrick Sean Smith has offered reassurance, confirming that such an exit is not imminent.
"He'll be in the show next year, but I think, season eight, a part of it really focuses on the strength of Jack and Preacher's friendship and the strength of that bond," Smith disclosed. "So regardless of how things work out in that regard, that's always such a special relationship that we want to be very careful with."
Supporters can now exhale with relief, knowing that Lawrence will reprise his role for at least another season. Nonetheless, Smith has not ruled out the possibility of the actor potentially reducing his central involvement or departing entirely in the yet-to-be-confirmed ninth and tenth seasons.
Cast Changes and Future Implications
The showrunner's comments follow official confirmation that both Lauren Hammersley, who plays Charmaine, and Marco Grazzini, portraying Mike, will no longer appear in the Netflix drama moving forward. Hollingsworth reflected on Grazzini's exit in Entertainment Weekly, stating, "He's a talented actor with a lot to offer, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's leading his own series next year at this time. What people might not realise about Marco is he's such a sweetheart and a fantastic guy. We're all going to miss him. He adds this specific flavour and texture to our set that will be sorely missed."
He acknowledged that witnessing cast members depart after such an extended tenure with the programme "stings a bit." Fortunately, Lawrence's Preacher has no current plans to join them, ensuring continuity for fans invested in the small-town saga. Virgin River remains available for streaming exclusively on Netflix.
