Music fans facing a gap in their summer schedule with Glastonbury Festival taking a fallow year in 2026 can look to Wales for a worthy replacement. Green Man Festival, held annually in the Black Mountains on the Glanusk Estate, returns from August 20-23 with a line-up that rivals Worthy Farm's usual offerings.
Headliners and Highlights
Wolf Alice, fresh from a standout performance at Glastonbury 2025 and riding high with their Mercury-nominated album The Clearing, which hit number one upon release, will headline the Sunday night. The festival also boasts long-standing alt-rock acts Wilco, The Beta Band, and Mogwai, providing a diverse mix of idiosyncratic and mystical sounds across multiple stages including the Mountain Stage, Walled Garden, and Far Out Stage.
Unexpected sets are a hallmark of Green Man, with last year's surprise appearance by Kneecap and regular visits from Welsh icon Gruff Rhys, frontman of Super Furry Animals. This year, the effervescent Getdown Services, known for their topless performances, have been upgraded to the main bill after stealing the show at the Round the Twist tent in 2025.
Supporting New Talent
Green Man's commitment to emerging artists is evident through its Green Man Rising scheme, which selects a winner to open the main Mountain Stage. This year's winner, Tall Child, will have the honour of kicking off the festival on the stage set against a natural amphitheatre of grassy inclines with a backdrop of the Black Mountains.
Beyond Music
The festival offers more than just music. The Last Laugh comedy tent features a stellar line-up including Stewart Lee, Joe Lycett, Kerry Godliman, and Saturday Night Live UK standout Jack Shep, whose Princess Diana impression has been highly praised. Panels, authors, Q&As, and cinema screenings ensure a full schedule of entertainment.
Green Man's commitment to environmental and social sustainability is woven into the festival experience. Compostable toilets, though requiring a strong stomach, and the fun-but-educational Einstein's Garden, where learning is creative and engaging, are part of the ethos. This feeds into the Green Man Trust, a charity supporting communities, arts, and more in Wales.
A Unique Atmosphere
According to Kathryn Williams, What's On Editor, who has attended multiple times over 15 years, "One of my happy places is sitting on that grass with a cold, icy strawberry smoothie on the hottest Sunday afternoon, a bit worse for wear and letting whatever's on the Mountain Stage wash over me." She adds, "Green Man just has a feeling, and you won't know until you've been there. It's enveloped in Welsh mountains, it's welcoming and fun and is fizzy with good vibes."
With its combination of great music, laughter, learning, food, and sunshine, Green Man Festival offers a compelling alternative for those missing Glastonbury in 2026. Tickets are available via the official resale site.
