Welsh Hotel Lanelay Hall Wins Afternoon Tea Award of Excellence

Lanelay Hall Hotel & Spa, a hidden manor house in Talbot Green, Rhondda Cynon Taff, has been named the only Welsh venue to receive the 'Award of Excellence' at the Afternoon Tea Awards 2026, organised by AfternoonTea.co.uk. The award recognizes venues across the UK judged by independent experts through unannounced visits, assessing every aspect of the guest experience.

Historic Manor with Modern Luxury

Built in 1821, Lanelay Hall sits on a site near the River Ely that has hosted a dwelling since the 16th century, when it was a modest farmhouse. For 50 years until 2007, the building served as the headquarters of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Today, it houses the Blok restaurant for fine steak dining, a luxury spa, and boutique hotel rooms, nestled among residential homes off Lanelay Lane.

Afternoon Tea in Lady Mary Cole's Tea Room

The afternoon tea is served in Lady Mary Cole’s Tea Room, named after the woman who lived there in the 1840s. The current menu features a collaboration with Penhaligon's perfumery, including finger sandwiches, freshly made scones, patisserie, and a choice of freshly brewed tea or Champagne. The traditional afternoon tea costs £50 per person, while the Champagne afternoon tea is £65 per person.

Jonathan Smith, Managing Director of Lanelay Hall Hotel & Spa, said: “The Lady Mary Cole Tea Room was born based on our desire to bring an experience-led traditional afternoon tea to South Wales, offering our guests a little bit of the London glamour in the valleys of South Wales.”

Judges Praise Bridgerton-Style Ambiance

Judges described the tea room as “reminiscent of a modern-day Bridgerton scene, sophisticated yet relaxed,” adding that “Welsh diners can now have the same high standard without the long-distance travel.” Keith Newton, Managing Director of AfternoonTea.co.uk, commented: “Behind every award is a team of people who genuinely care about what they do, and it’s a privilege to be able to recognise that on a national stage.”

Lanelay Hall is the only Welsh venue honoured at this year's awards, highlighting its unique offering in the region.
