Coronation Street character Summer Spellman, played by Harriet Bibby, will be rushed to hospital next week after abusing her insulin. The teenager, who has been struggling with diabetes and an eating disorder, makes a risky decision to stop taking her medication.
In upcoming episodes, Summer feels pressure ahead of her university exams and is confronted by her guardian Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank), who accuses her of not taking her insulin regularly. After storming out, she later throws her insulin down the sink.
When Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) returns home with a takeaway, Summer assures him she has taken her insulin, but her blood sugar spikes, causing panic. She calms down when levels return to normal, but later secretly tips more insulin down the sink before her maths exam.
During the exam, Summer's vision blurs and she realises she has left her diabetes kit at home. She is loaded into an ambulance, tearfully telling Aadi Alahan (Adam Hussain) that her blood sugar is dangerously high.
Harriet Bibby previously said her character might struggle with the condition, noting: 'I don't think as a teenager she likes being told what to do. You have to stay on top of your medication because otherwise it can have domino effects on your health.'
