British Adventurer Risks Blindness from Tuberculosis Infection During Global Quest
David Simpson, a 38-year-old adventurer from Belfast, faces the terrifying prospect of losing his eyesight after contracting a potentially deadly infection while pursuing his ambitious goal of visiting every country in the world. The property developer had already successfully travelled to 150 nations before picking up latent tuberculosis during extensive travels across South Asia last year.
Sudden Onset of Vision Problems
The normally restless traveller, who typically embarks on five or six international trips annually, first noticed something was seriously wrong when watching television. 'I noticed that whenever I was watching TV there was a blur, a flashing light in my eye,' Simpson explained. The latent tuberculosis infection had begun aggressively attacking his left eye, causing disturbing visual disturbances and blurred vision that prompted immediate medical attention.
Doctors quickly diagnosed the condition as ocular tuberculosis, a rare but serious complication where the immune system attacks eye tissue. 'Eventually they diagnosed and they seen it was latent TB,' Simpson confirmed. The diagnosis forced him onto a rigorous regimen of powerful medications and immunosuppressants as medical teams worked desperately to prevent further deterioration.
Medical Crisis and Forced Isolation
At the peak of his treatment, Simpson was taking an astonishing 25 tablets each morning to control the dangerous inflammation threatening his vision. The immunosuppressants left his immune system severely compromised, forcing him into strict isolation to avoid even minor illnesses that could prove catastrophic. 'I had to cancel my round trip. I had to isolate from people because I couldn't contract colds or flus because my immune system is a bit hacked,' he revealed.
The sudden confinement proved particularly challenging for someone accustomed to constant movement and social interaction. 'For somebody who goes away so often every year, not being able to socialise with more than maybe three or four people was difficult to manage,' Simpson admitted. 'I wasn't able to go out for dinner in restaurants or cafes or anything like that, it was quite difficult.'
Permanent Vision Damage and Ongoing Treatment
Medical professionals warned that without timely intervention, Simpson could have lost his eye completely. 'If I didn't catch it, it would have taken my eye,' he stated bluntly. While treatment has prevented total blindness, some damage appears irreversible. 'The issue now is I won't get that eyesight back. I've got partial loss in my left eye and that's permanent,' Simpson confirmed.
Describing his current visual impairment, he explained: 'If I look at you with my bad eye, I see much less than half your face. The rest is grey.' The primary medical focus now is preventing further deterioration. 'The main thing is stopping it getting worse, because if it moves into my direct line of vision, then we'll have bigger issues.'
Simpson remains cautiously optimistic about his recovery timeline, noting: 'We're not yet off the medication, so hopefully I will know within the next 4 to 6 weeks if I'm out of it without losing my eyesight.'
No Regrets Despite Health Crisis
Remarkably, the adventurer expresses no regrets about the travels that led to his current health crisis. 'If someone had told me before one of these trips that I'd lose partial vision in one eye, I'd probably still have gone,' he stated defiantly. The experience has, however, given him profound appreciation for the value of sight. 'People said they'd rather lose a leg, even two, than their eyesight. For me, it would mean I couldn't keep having the same experiences.'
How the Infection Occurred
Simpson believes he contracted tuberculosis simply through proximity to an infected individual while travelling, comparing its transmission to COVID-19. 'If you're within a certain distance of someone with TB, you can catch it. It could be as simple as being on a flight. I was in South Asia, where it's a huge issue,' he explained. Although his current infection remains latent and non-contagious, there remains concern it could become active tuberculosis.
Determination to Continue Travelling
Despite the health scare, Simpson plans to resume his global travels as soon as doctors provide medical clearance. His ambitious goal of visiting every country began around 2015 after taking two years off work to visit approximately 70-80 nations. 'I realised how much of the world I still hadn't seen, so I set myself the goal of visiting every country,' he recalled.
The intrepid traveller has already visited numerous challenging destinations including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Russia. He maintains that 'everywhere is possible to visit' with proper local contacts and guidance. 'I could go to Iran now if I wanted. It just depends on getting the right person to take you,' he noted.
Risk Management and Memorable Journeys
In higher-risk regions, Simpson relies on trusted local guides and established networks. 'There's a network of contacts who can get you into these areas,' he explained. 'The situation changes quickly, but they have eyes and ears on the ground in difficult regions.' While cautious about unnecessary risks, he admitted to carefully weighing danger against experience. 'I know some people who go on their own. I probably wouldn't. I feel I've got too much to lose. Everyone has. You look at the risk and reward.'
Among his most memorable adventures was persuading his elderly father to join him in Pakistan. 'I told him England were playing cricket there. That was the carrot,' Simpson recalled with amusement. Their journey included flying into Karachi, visiting local slums, taking overnight trains, and an attempted entry into Baluchistan before being turned back by authorities.
Born and raised in Belfast, Simpson has remained at home since Christmas while battling to preserve his remaining vision. Despite the significant health setback and inherent dangers of his chosen pursuit, he remains absolutely determined to complete his mission of visiting every country worldwide.
