Jane Fallon to Undergo Surgery After Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Best-selling novelist Jane Fallon has publicly disclosed a breast cancer diagnosis and is scheduled to undergo surgery later this month. The 65-year-old author, renowned for popular works like Getting Rid Of Matthew and Faking Friends, is also the long-term partner of celebrated comedian Ricky Gervais.

Instagram Announcement and Diagnosis Details

Fallon shared the personal health update with her 35,400 followers on Instagram this Thursday. She explained that her diagnosis resulted from a routine breast screening, specifically a mammogram, conducted just before Christmas last year.

"About a month ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer – very early stage thankfully & the prognosis is excellent," Fallon wrote. "I had a routine mammogram a week before Christmas. I had no symptoms but the brilliant radiographer spotted something iffy & sent me for further tests & eventually a biopsy."

She detailed the subsequent medical procedures, stating: "Since then I’ve had more mammograms, more biopsies and an MRI so they can pinpoint the problem area precisely."

Treatment Plans and Personal Coping

The writer reassured her audience that she is receiving "incredible care" and is mentally prepared to proceed with treatment. "It’s been a lot, I’m not going to lie. But, my surgery is scheduled for the week after next and I just want to get it over with now," Fallon continued.

She added, "I’m getting incredible care and all will be fine but I’m not engaging with much beyond audiobooks & jigsaws." Her Instagram post featured a carousel of images, including a photo of herself, a teddy bear named Dr Eric, and her cat "Nurse Pickle" dressed in a digital nurse outfit.

Breast Cancer Context and NHS Information

According to the National Health Service, breast cancer remains the most prevalent type of cancer among women in the United Kingdom. If left untreated, it can potentially spread to other body parts, a condition known as secondary breast cancer.

Common symptoms include:

  • A lump or swelling in the breast, chest, or armpit
  • Noticeable changes in the skin texture of the breast
  • Alterations in the size or shape of one or both breasts

Mammograms are crucial screening tools that can detect breast cancer at an early stage, often before any physical symptoms manifest. Early detection significantly increases the likelihood of successful treatment outcomes.
