Transform Your Christmas Red Cabbage with 3 Simple Ingredients
Chef's Sweet & Tangy Red Cabbage Recipe for Christmas

A recipe developer has shared a simple yet transformative method for preparing red cabbage, promising to make it the star of your Christmas dinner table.

The Viral Festive Side Dish

While roast turkey and pigs in blankets often steal the spotlight, no festive feast is truly complete without vibrant and flavourful side dishes. Amy Sheppard, a recipe developer, offered a creative solution to the often uninspiring boiled cabbage in a TikTok video posted in November. Her aim was to elevate the humble vegetable into something spectacular.

In the video, which has been viewed 73,900 times and received over 2,251 likes, Amy introduced her dish. "If you're looking for a Christmas Day side dish that's a little bit different," she said, "One that tastes amazing but is super easy to make, you have got to add this one to your list."

The Secret Trio of Ingredients

Amy's recipe goes beyond simply cooking red cabbage. She starts by finely shredding 400g of red cabbage and slicing two red onions for a touch of sharpness. The magic, however, lies in three key festive ingredients added to the pan.

After softening the cabbage and onion in 50g of butter, she stirs in four tablespoons of cranberry sauce, two teaspoons of honey, and one teaspoon of Dijon mustard. This combination creates the unique sweet yet tangy flavour profile she champions.

"It's a little bit sweet and a little bit tangy," Amy explained. "We've had it with our roast for the last couple of weeks and it's just so good...and the leftovers are amazing in a ham and cheese toastie."

Public Reaction and Serving Suggestions

The recipe has garnered enthusiastic comments from home cooks. One user, Nisey, commented, "Look as good going to try this thank you," while Imane wrote, "Looks delicious definitely will try this out."

Others offered their own twists, with one suggesting adding grated apple. A comment from SweetSilly highlighted its traditional roots: "Christmas tradition in Denmark. No christmas dinner without it."

To make Amy Sheppard's Ruby Red Cabbage & Onion:

  1. Melt 50g butter in a large pan and fry the sliced onions and shredded cabbage for ten minutes until soft.
  2. Stir in the cranberry sauce, honey, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.
  3. Cook for a further two minutes until everything is heated through and serve alongside your roast.

This simple recipe proves that with a few thoughtful additions, a classic Christmas vegetable can be transformed into a memorable and delicious centrepiece for your festive spread.
