Expert Warns Against Triple Action Lawn Products in May

As May begins, many gardeners are planning trips to garden centres, but one expert horticulturist has issued a warning about a common mistake that could harm lawns. Peter Dowdall, known as The Irish Gardener, has 30 years of experience and cautions against buying triple action products—lawn feed combined with moss killer and weed killer.

The Danger of Triple Action Products

Speaking exclusively to this reporter, Dowdall explained that these products are among the best-selling items in garden centres at this time of year. However, he described them as ecologically damaging, comparing their use to "blanket bombing" lawns. He noted that many areas treated do not have weeds or moss, meaning chemicals are applied unnecessarily.

"That has a huge ecological disadvantage impact to it," Dowdall said. "You are applying loads of chemicals to the biggest part of your garden which might not be necessary—and then you want kids to go out and roll in it and play in it." He strongly advised against using such products.

Other May Gardening Mistakes

Dowdall also warned against buying brightly coloured summer bedding plants and planting them directly outdoors. Although they look stunning, evening temperatures are still too low for these plants, which are grown in artificial environments and cannot withstand the cold.

For those determined to keep lawns moss-free without chemicals, Dowdall recommended a mechanical approach. First, scarify the lawn using a mechanical rake to remove moss and thatch. Then, aerate the soil by creating tiny holes in the top two inches, optionally filling them with grit or sand to improve drainage. He emphasised that this is a yearly task requiring considerable effort but is ecologically sound.

Dowdall also highlighted the benefits of moss, including air purification, and advised that if a perfect moss-free lawn is desired, it should be achieved without chemicals.
