Fish and Chips Crowned Best British Dish as Poll Reveals Cuisine is Underrated
Fish and Chips Tops Poll as Brits Say UK Cuisine is Underrated

A comprehensive new poll has crowned fish and chips as the undisputed champion of British cuisine, with the traditional Sunday roast and Yorkshire pudding tying for a close second place. The survey, conducted by research agency OnePoll, involved 2,000 adults and aimed to gauge public opinion on the nation's culinary offerings.

Underrated or Overrated? Brits Weigh In

Interestingly, the study uncovered that more than a third of respondents, specifically 37%, believe British food is unfairly dismissed and deserves greater acclaim. This sentiment highlights a growing perception that UK cuisine is often underestimated on the global stage.

Generational Divide in Food Appreciation

However, the data reveals a notable generational split. While 45% of those aged over 80 are strong advocates for British cuisine, only 34% of Gen Z share this view. This suggests younger demographics may be less inclined to champion traditional dishes, potentially due to evolving tastes or exposure to international flavours.

Harry Gove from OnePoll commented on the findings, stating, "While we may enjoy many of our comfort foods – from roasts to fish and chips, to a pack of Monster Munch – others might not have the same fondness." He added, "A lot of people are starting to talk about how British cuisine is often underestimated rather than overrated. Dishes that feel familiar or comforting might be dismissed as boring, even though they rely heavily on technique, timing and produce."

Adventurous Eaters and Food Turn-Offs

The poll also delved into Brits' eating habits, revealing that four in ten admit to being "a bit picky" when it comes to food. Common deterrents include texture issues, with one in three put off by slimy or mushy consistencies, and 28% avoiding foods with fishy or sulphuric odours.

In contrast, Gen Z emerged as the most adventurous demographic, with 28% of all respondents identifying them as such, and a whopping 60% of Gen Zs themselves embracing culinary experimentation. The foods that Brits are least enthusiastic about include blue cheese, olives, and jellied eel, which topped the list of turn-offs.
