Davina McCall's Candid Account of Breast Cancer Anger and Relief
Beloved television presenter Davina McCall has shared a powerful and emotional account of her recent breast cancer diagnosis, revealing the raw anger she felt upon hearing the news just one year after major brain surgery. The 58-year-old star disclosed that she has already undergone a successful lumpectomy to remove the cancer after discovering a lump in a moment spurred by a public health poster.
The Moment of Diagnosis and Overwhelming Anger
McCall recounted the difficult conversations with her fiancé, Michael Douglas, describing how she was "fucking stamping her feet" with fury. "I got really fucking angry," she admitted during a Dine With Davina charity event. "And you know me, I'm a pacifist – I don't really get angry – I'm like Tigger. I'm just always happy. I was like: 'Are you fucking joking? What the fuck! Are you serious?'"
She explained that she was initially trying to suppress her emotions, but Douglas saw through it. "I was keeping it all in and Michael one day looked at me and he said: 'Stop. I can see what you're doing. You're not going there,'" McCall recalled. His insistence led to a cathartic release. "He just sat and he came and watched me and I was fucking stamping my feet. And it felt so good," she said.
The Lifesaving Poster and Early Detection
The star's cancer was caught at a very early stage, a fact she credits to a poster she saw in the ITV headquarters toilets. The sign, championed by Lorraine Kelly, urged women to "check their boobs" and listed what to look for, with a prominent message reading: "SAVE YOUR LIFE in the time it takes to get changed."
McCall shared that she was "sitting on the loo" when she decided to check herself, later finding a lump. She stressed the critical importance of this action, stating her cancer was "very very small" and "incredibly lucky" to have been found so early. Following the lumpectomy, doctors have given her the all-clear, though she will undergo five days of radiotherapy in January as a precaution.
A Year of Health Challenges and a Positive Future
This breast cancer diagnosis comes exactly one year after McCall underwent a gruelling six-hour operation to remove a benign colloid cyst brain tumour. She has spoken previously about the trauma of that experience, which left her prone to crying. Despite the recent challenges, the former Big Brother host ended her announcement on a positive note. "I was very angry when I found out, but I let go of that and I feel in a much more positive place now," she said.
Her message to the public was clear and urgent: "The message here, is know your boobs. Notice any changes. Don't procrastinate. Get your free checkups. And never ignore a niggle." Following her announcement, famous friends including Julia Bradbury and Amanda Holden rushed to offer their support and best wishes.
