From £100k Debt and 22 Stone to Freedom: How a 2pm Rule Transformed a Life

A car salesman whose life spiraled into £100,000 of debt and a weight of 22.5 stone has completely turned his fortunes around with a simple daily rule: not eating until 2pm. Paul Fish, 47, from Cardiff, battled a destructive cycle of binge eating, cocaine addiction, and financial ruin before discovering a path to recovery through fasting and exercise.

A Descent into Addiction and Debt

Paul's troubles began during the 2007 financial crisis, when his modest salary as a car salesman could not cover mounting debts. The pressure led him to drink heavily, and as his financial situation worsened, his relationship broke down, triggering a vicious cycle of substance abuse and overeating.

At his lowest point, Paul was consuming food up to 10 times a day while spending £700 weekly on cocaine. A dealer would throw two grams over his garden fence every morning, and he would spend entire days indoors using drugs and binge-eating crisps and chocolate. His weight ballooned to 22 stone 5lbs, and he wore size XXXL clothing.

The Wake-Up Call and Initial Steps

In 2021, Paul was denied wisdom tooth surgery because doctors deemed his BMI too high at 22.5 stone. This rejection served as a crucial wake-up call. The very next day, he put on his trainers and started walking 12,000 steps daily. He even completed a 150km charity walk for Great Ormond Street Hospital over 14 days.

However, progress was limited because he continued using cocaine and eating poorly. Between 2021 and 2025, he lost just over three stone, dropping to 18 stone 10, but felt he was "getting nowhere" in his overall health journey.

The Transformative Power of Fasting

Paul's breakthrough came when he started watching nutrition videos on YouTube and decided to experiment with fasting. He adopted a strict regimen: delaying all food until 2pm or sometimes 4pm each day. He swapped Gregg's chicken and mayo sandwiches with crisps for a healthy diet of salmon, avocado, Greek yoghurt, chicken, and steak.

From Monday to Saturday, he consumes less than 40g of carbs, with a "carb refeed" on Sunday where he eats 450g. He also lifts weights six times a week and takes supplements like collagen, magnesium, and ashwagandha.

A Spiritual Awakening and Lasting Change

On 31 October 2025, Paul experienced what he describes as a "spiritual awakening." This moment marked the end of his 25-year cocaine addiction, despite previous attempts through cocaine anonymous and counselling. He has not touched the drug since, attributing his success to this profound personal shift.

Following this awakening, he shed a further three stone, bringing his weight down to 15 stone 8. Paul says, "Fixing my food was the final piece of the jigsaw. My mental health has improved so much because I'm giving my body what it wants. I feel like I've been released from prison."

Inspiring Others Through Community

Now drug-free and healthier, Paul is on a mission to help others. He has established a walking group in Cardiff called the Monday Reset Project and shares his journey on his TikTok channel @paulfish.ckd. His first event on 8 March was attended by Welsh boxer Joe Cordina, and he anticipates over 100 attendees at his next gathering on 29 March.

Paul reflects, "I'm now on a mission to help other people", turning his personal struggle into a source of inspiration and support for his community. His story demonstrates how simple lifestyle changes, coupled with determination and a pivotal moment of clarity, can lead to profound transformation.
