Friends Superfans Turn to Show's Voices for Sleep and Celebrate with Limited-Edition McDonald's Meal

For Nikki Hardy, a self-employed nail technician from Aberdeen, the soothing voices of Chandler, Joey, Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, and Ross have become an essential part of her nightly routine. What began as a lockdown coping mechanism has evolved into a steadfast habit, with Nikki and her 13-year-old son Josh using episodes of the iconic sitcom Friends to drift off to sleep.

A Comforting Ritual Born from Uncertainty

"It started in lockdown, I was really struggling with sleeping because of the uncertainty of everything, and was just feeling really wired," Nikki explains. "So one night, because it's so familiar and I don't have to concentrate on it, I put Friends on for comfort." This simple act helped her relax and quickly became a nightly ritual. Now, she plays an episode on her iPad every evening, having purchased the series on Amazon Prime after it was dropped from Netflix earlier this year, causing her momentary panic.

Nikki, now 40 and a mother of three, fell in love with Friends when it first aired on UK TV screens in 1995 and has watched episodes thousands of times since. "It's the warmth and humour. It's so comforting. They've been in my life now for so long that I just feel a real connection with the characters," she says. Her son Josh follows suit, playing the show on his computer to help him sleep as well.

A Lifelong Obsession Manifested in Travel and Tattoos

Nikki's devotion to Friends extends far beyond the bedroom. She has traveled the world to honor her passion, visiting the show's iconic New York apartments in 2008 and 2024, and touring the Warner Brothers Studio in Los Angeles with her husband Kris to see the original set. "We've seen the stage and the original fountain, the sofa, and Central Perk Cafe. It was really cool," she adds.

Her love is even etched into her skin with two Friends-themed tattoos. At home, her bedroom houses a Friends shrine crowded with memorabilia, including bags, books, t-shirts, coloring sets, and Funko Pop toys, many sourced from Vinted.

McDonald's Friends Meal Sparks Excitement Among Fans

Nikki's fandom has found a new outlet with McDonald's limited-edition Friends Meal, available in restaurants nationwide until March 16 while stocks last. The meal features one of six collectible characters for diners ordering a Big Mac, nine McNuggets, or a McPlant. "When I was pregnant with my two youngest, I was obsessed with McDonald's meals. I couldn't get enough of them," she laughs, noting she plans to return to restaurants to collect more items.

Additionally, customers using the MyMcDonald's Rewards app have a chance to win one of four exclusive Friends-inspired mugs until March 16. This campaign has resonated deeply with superfans like Nikki and Lucy Wilkinson.

Lucy Wilkinson: A Monica in Real Life

Lucy Wilkinson, a 39-year-old mortgage advisor from Sheffield, has also been hooked on Friends since childhood. She interrupted her New Year diet to visit McDonald's for the Friends Meal, proudly obtaining the Monica character, her favorite. "I loved it. I had all the pencil cases and the board games, and even now, the first thing I do when I get home is put it on the TV," she says.

Lucy, who self-identifies as the hyper-organized and tidy Monica, has woven the show into her personal life. Friends and family buy her Friends-themed gifts, she maintains a shrine in her utility room, and her 2018 hen party and wedding were dominated by Friends motifs. Her hen party in Tenerife featured name badges and a laminated itinerary titled "the one where Lucy got married," with guests assigned Friends characters.

At her wedding, cheese and pork pie cake bore the topper "he's my lobster," referencing Phoebe Buffay's description of Ross and Rachel's relationship. The couple signed the register to U2's "With or Without You," the song from Ross and Rachel's first kiss, though her husband Will drew the line at entering the reception to the Friends theme tune—"He put his foot down on that," she laughs, admitting it played at the end of the night.

Lucy even won a Friends quiz at the UK Central Perk tour in 2009 and watches the show on holiday, prompting her husband to remark, "I can't believe we're abroad and we're still watching Friends." Her dedication shows how the series has become a comforting constant, much like for Nikki, proving that for these superfans, Friends is more than a show—it's a lifelong companion.
