Dermatologist Reveals How to Prevent and Treat Décolletage Ageing
How to Prevent and Treat Décolletage Ageing

Why Your Décolletage Shows Ageing Signs Faster Than Your Face

The skin on your décolletage – encompassing the neck, chest, and upper breast area – is notoriously susceptible to visible signs of ageing. Common complaints include pigmentation, fine lines, and a crinkled, crepe-like texture. While ageing is a natural process, many find it frustrating when the décolletage appears to age more rapidly than the facial skin.

This phenomenon occurs because the décolletage area often receives less skincare attention than the face, despite having particularly thin skin with fewer oil glands. This combination makes it vulnerable to damage and neglect.

Common Décolletage Concerns and Their Causes

Dr Anjali Mahto, Consultant Dermatologist and Founder of Self London, identifies the most frequent patient complaints. Patients typically first notice a crepe-like texture and vertical sleep lines that fail to bounce back. The sudden appearance of mottled brown sun spots and persistent redness is another major concern, making the chest look older than the face.

Crepey skin results from progressive collagen and elastin loss, exacerbated by the area's natural thinness and lack of moisture. Pigmentation and sun spots are almost exclusively due to cumulative UV damage over decades, as the chest is frequently sun-exposed but rarely protected with sunscreen.

Effective Treatments for Décolletage Ageing

Improving skin texture involves extending your facial skincare routine down to your chest. Dr Mahto recommends using hydrating ceramides and collagen-stimulating retinoids at night to enhance moisture and firmness.

For pigmentation, topical ingredients like vitamin C can significantly fade spots. For faster results, in-clinic treatments such as BBL (BroadBand Light) are exceptional at targeting UV-induced damage.

Other effective treatments include injectable skin boosters like Profhilo or polynucleotides, which deeply hydrate and smooth the chest. Sofwave, a treatment for the neck, stimulates collagen to firm the area. However, Dr Mahto advises avoiding aggressive deep chemical peels or heavy dermal fillers here, as the delicate skin is more prone to scarring.

Regarding LED masks, Dr Mahto does not recommend them, suggesting patients invest in more proven treatments instead.

Lifestyle Factors Impacting the Décolletage

Significant weight loss can dramatically affect the décolletage, as reduced underlying fat volume leaves skin looking deflated, exacerbating laxity and sagging. Pregnancy and breastfeeding also heavily influence this area due to rapid breast volume fluctuations and hormonal shifts that stretch the delicate skin.

Preventative Measures for Long-Term Care

The single most effective preventative measure is daily application of broad-spectrum sunscreen extended down to the chest. This protects against UV damage, the primary cause of pigmentation and ageing.

Additionally, sleeping on your back rather than your side can help prevent deep, vertical cleavage wrinkles from forming and setting over time.

Dr Mahto emphasizes a holistic approach: Your skincare routine should never stop at your jawline. Treat your face, neck, and chest as one continuous unit to ensure your skin ages cohesively and maintains a youthful appearance.
