Afghanistan Reports Child Deaths as Border Clashes with Pakistan Enter Third Week
Afghanistan Says Pakistani Mortars Killed 2 Children in Border Clashes

Afghanistan has reported that two children were killed and ten people injured in southeastern Afghanistan due to Pakistani mortar shells, as fighting between Taliban forces and Pakistan's military along their shared border stretches into a third consecutive week. The mortar fire also destroyed several homes in the region, according to Afghan officials.

Escalating Border Conflict

This incident follows a Pakistani report of four family members killed and two injured in its Bajaur district from an Afghan mortar, which prompted immediate military retaliation from Pakistan. The exchange of fire has resulted in casualties on both sides, marking a significant escalation in the long-standing border tensions.

Political Tensions and Accusations

Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari has declared that Afghanistan's Taliban administration crossed a "red line" with drone attacks, leading to Pakistani airstrikes on equipment sites in Afghanistan's Kandahar province. Pakistan accuses Kabul of harbouring militant groups, such as the Pakistani Taliban, which Afghanistan denies, stating that the conflict was imposed upon them and has disrupted a previous Qatar-brokered ceasefire.

The ongoing clashes highlight the fragile nature of relations between the two neighbouring countries, with both sides blaming each other for the violence. The situation remains tense as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict have so far been unsuccessful, raising concerns about further civilian casualties and regional instability.
