Jason Bateman and Amanda Anka Enjoy Glamorous Night at Actor Awards
Jason Bateman and his wife Amanda Anka made a stunning appearance at the newly renamed Actor Awards, held at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday. The 57-year-old former child star looked impeccably dressed in a classic tuxedo paired with patent leather Oxfords for the Netflix-streamed ceremony presented by SAG-AFTRA.
Bateman's Nomination and Tough Competition
Bateman is nominated for the outstanding performance by a male actor in a TV movie or limited series for his portrayal of the messy Vince Friedken in the Netflix brother drama Black Rabbit. However, the SmartLess co-host faces formidable competition from frontrunner Owen Cooper of Adolescence, alongside fellow nominees Stephen Graham from Adolescence, Charlie Hunnam from Monster: The Ed Gein Story, and Matthew Rhys from The Beast in Me.
Amanda Anka's Elegant Style
Meanwhile, the 57-year-old retired actress served as Bateman's elegant companion for the evening. Anka showcased her toned arms in a mirror-embellished strapless gown with matching heels, accessorizing solely with her wedding ring. The New York-born couple, who co-starred in the 2003 romantic comedy Sol Good, are proud parents of two daughters: 19-year-old Franny and 14-year-old Maple.
Bateman's Sobriety Journey and Marriage
Bateman did not achieve "California sober" until 2004, three years into his 24-year marriage to Anka, who consistently encouraged him to quit drinking alcohol and using cocaine, which he referred to as "the Scarface stuff." In a recent interview with THR Magazine, Bateman revealed, "Amanda and I definitely had a few negotiations about the point at which the [partying] spigot was going to completely turn off." He added that Anka would say, "This drip, drip drip is annoyingly unpredictable, Jason." After some deliberation, Bateman decided to embrace sobriety to alleviate tension in their relationship.
Early Relationship Challenges
Interestingly, when Bateman first met Anka at an LA Kings game in 1988, she postponed dating him for a full decade due to his hard-partying Hollywood lifestyle. Anka, the daughter of singer Paul Anka, explained in a 2013 GQ interview, "I just wasn't into where he was at." She humorously noted that now, "I can't get him off the couch to go to a party. This is a guy who wants to go get frozen yogurt and come home."
Bateman's Career Resurgence
Bateman, who occasionally uses marijuana gummies, was remarkably disciplined as a youth actor, appearing in projects like Little House on the Prairie, Silver Spoons, and Teen Wolf Too to support his family financially. After concluding his six-season role as David in the NBC sitcom The Hogan Family in 1991, he indulged in a wild phase, later recalling, "Fortunately, I was living at a time without social media and camera phones, so I got away with a lot."
His career resurgence began with his role as Michael Bluth in the satirical sitcom Arrested Development, which aired from 2003 to 2006 on Fox and from 2013 to 2019 on Netflix. Bateman then leveraged this success into a prestige era, producing, directing, and starring in the Netflix drug drama Ozark, followed by a lucrative $100 million deal co-hosting the podcast SmartLess. Reflecting on his journey, Bateman stated, "Having been on the outside looking in for so long, I'd gotten a real good sense of what it was that provided longevity, and it wasn't fame or money, it was respect." He added, "I still feel like I'm trying not to be a child-actor failure. I'm still trying to make it out."
Upcoming Projects and Production Ventures
The three-time Actor Award winner will next executive produce and star as Clark, entangled in a love triangle, in Steve Conrad's seven-episode series DTF St. Louis, premiering Sunday night on HBO Max. The black comedy and murder mystery also features Linda Cardellini, Richard Jenkins, Joy Sunday, and Peter Sarsgaard, with one middle-aged character, played by David Harbour, meeting an untimely end.
Bateman's production company, Aggregate Films, is also behind Courteney Cox's second directorial feature, Evil Genius, starring David Harbour, Patricia Arquette, Ryan Eggold, and Thomas Michael Allen. This indie crime thriller is based on the 2018 Netflix docuseries about the 2003 death of pizza delivery man Brian Wells. Meanwhile, Anka's last credited role was producing the Apple TV+ newsroom drama The Morning Show from 2019 to 2021.
