Deadliest Catch Star's Concussion Weeks Before Tragic Overboard Death Revealed

Todd Meadows, a 25-year-old star of the long-running Discovery Channel series Deadliest Catch, was reportedly on medical leave after suffering a concussion just weeks before his tragic death at sea. The young fisherman fell overboard during filming last month, and his heartbroken mother has now shared details of the earlier incident, urging that footage of the accident never be aired.

Medical Leave Following Head Injury

According to his mother, Angela Meadows, Todd sustained a blow to the head approximately one month before the fatal event while working on the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady. In line with standard injury protocols, he visited a doctor who diagnosed him with a concussion. Following this medical assessment, he was flown back to Washington to recover for about a week.

Angela described this period as her last moments with her son, recalling a final photo she received of him building a fire and listening to music. "He was so happy. That's how I want to remember him," she told TMZ. After receiving medical clearance, Todd was excited to return to sea, but tragedy struck shortly after.

The Tragic Incident at Sea

On February 25, 2026, Meadows fell into the freezing waters of the Bering Sea while filming scenes for Deadliest Catch. The vessel was approximately 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, at the time. The U.S. Coast Guard reported that crew members recovered him unresponsive about ten minutes later, and attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

Captain Rick Shelford, also featured on the show, shared the devastating news on Facebook, calling it "the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady." He praised Todd's strong work ethic and contagious smile, noting how quickly he became part of the crew's family.

Mother's Plea to Discovery Channel

With cameras rolling during the incident, Angela Meadows has made a heartfelt plea to Discovery and production teams to never air the footage. "We don’t want to see any footage of the accident and do not want Discovery to air any of that footage or make money off of our son’s death," she stated firmly. The death remains under investigation, adding to the family's grief as they seek answers and closure.

This tragic event highlights the inherent dangers faced by those in the fishing industry, even under the watchful eye of television production. As the community mourns the loss of a vibrant young man, questions about safety protocols and the handling of such sensitive footage continue to arise.
