Dune 3 First Look Images Reveal Darker Turn for Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides
Timothée Chalamet has unveiled the official first look at his character Paul Atreides in the highly anticipated film Dune: Part Three. The images, released on Monday, depict a significantly transformed Paul, marking a stark departure from his appearance in the previous two instalments of the sci-fi epic.
A Visually Striking Transformation
The new image showcases Chalamet clad in a Fremen stillsuit, with prominent red scarring and deep wrinkles encircling his eyes. This dramatic visual shift hints at the character's evolution following the events of Dune: Part Two, where Paul overthrew the Emperor and ignited a galaxy-spanning holy war.
Shortly after Chalamet's reveal, the film's official social media channels disseminated additional first-look pictures featuring the returning ensemble cast. These include:
- Zendaya as Chani
- Javier Bardem as Stilgar
- Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica
- Florence Pugh as Irulan
- Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides
- Isaach De Bankolé as Farok
New Faces and Narrative Foundations
The release also provided the inaugural glimpse of Robert Pattinson, who joins the franchise in the third film as the new antagonist, Scytale. In Frank Herbert's original novels, Scytale is a Tleilaxu Face Dancer—a genetically engineered shapeshifter and master manipulator central to a conspiracy aimed at overthrowing Emperor Paul Atreides.
Dune: Part Three is directly adapted from Herbert's 1969 novel, Dune Messiah, the second book in the seminal Dune series. The narrative is expected to commence with Paul already wielding power, grappling with the profound consequences of his prior decisions that set the holy war in motion.
Production Insights and Cast Reflections
Production for the third chapter commenced in July of the previous year. During initial sightings, Chalamet was observed wearing a baseball cap with a green bandana, sparking fan speculation about a potential haircut as his signature wavy locks were not visible.
In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Rebecca Ferguson, who portrays Paul's mother, Lady Jessica, disclosed that her role in the forthcoming film is notably limited. "I just dipped my toe in. I have no, sort of, comments on it," Ferguson remarked. "The script is great, I've read it. I think it's gonna be fantastic. But my journey was No. 1 and 2. I don't even think [Lady Jessica] was supposed to be in 3. And then Denis was like, 'I need to have one scene,' and I get one scene."
She further expressed the peculiar sentiment of returning to a familiar set with a minimal role, noting, "There's a lot of FOMO. And the acceptance of, 'This is just what it is.' You just have to serve [the story]."
Critical and Commercial Predecessor
Denis Villeneuve's epic adaptation of Frank Herbert's influential sci-fi saga has garnered widespread critical acclaim. Dune: Part Two proved to be a monumental commercial success, grossing over $631 million worldwide and securing its position as the highest-grossing film of 2024.
The official trailer for Dune: Part Three is anticipated to debut next week, building further excitement for the film's scheduled release. Dune: Part Three is set to land in cinemas globally on 18 December 2026.
