Grey's Anatomy Star Eric Dane Passes Away at Age 53

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of actor Eric Dane, who died on Thursday at the age of 53 following a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His passing was confirmed by his family in a statement to People magazine, coming less than a year after he publicly revealed his diagnosis.

A Legacy as Dr. Mark Sloan

Dane was best known for his portrayal of the charismatic plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan, affectionately nicknamed "McSteamy," on the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy. He first appeared on the ABC series in February 2006, with his death occurring on the 20th anniversary of that debut episode. Dane remained with the show until season nine, when his character tragically died in a plane crash.

Throughout his Hollywood career, Dane built a diverse portfolio of roles, but it was his work on Grey's Anatomy that cemented his place in television history. He shared the screen with prominent cast members including Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Kate Walsh, Kevin McKidd, Sarah Drew, Sandra Oh, and Katherine Heigl.

Heartfelt Tributes from Co-Stars

Following news of his passing, several of Dane's former colleagues took to social media to express their grief and share memories. Kevin McKidd, who played Dr. Owen Hunt, reposted an image of Dane as Dr. Sloan on his Instagram stories with the caption: 'Rest in Peace Buddy.'

Sarah Drew, who portrayed Dr. April Kepner, shared the same photograph and wrote simply: 'Rest in peace,' accompanied by crying face emojis. The show's production company, 20th Television, issued an official statement praising Dane's remarkable talent and unforgettable presence on the series.

The statement continued: 'His courage and grace during his battle with ALS inspired so many. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and colleagues, as well as the many fans whose lives were touched by his work.' A special tribute to Dane is scheduled to air during the upcoming episode of Grey's Anatomy on February 26.

Ellen Pompeo's Emotional Reflection

Earlier this month, Ellen Pompeo, who has played Dr. Meredith Grey since the show's inception, recalled her conversation with Dane after learning of his ALS diagnosis last April. Speaking at the ALS Network Champions for Cures & Care Gala, Pompeo described instantly falling in love with Dane when he joined the cast in season two.

'I remember when he came in as McSteamy and us having instant electric chemistry,' she said in a pre-taped message. 'As soon as I heard about his diagnosis, I texted him, and I said, "I'm here if you want to speak." And my phone rang 30 seconds later.'

During their emotional conversation, Pompeo assured Dane: 'I'm here for you for whatever you need, however I can help. I love you.' In her gala message, she added: 'I'm really proud of you. I love you so much and I am honored to get to speak about you today.'

Hollywood Friends Share Memories

Numerous other celebrities who worked with Dane throughout his career offered moving tributes. Ashton Kutcher, who co-starred with Dane in the 2010 film Valentine's Day, wrote on X: 'The Franklin strip fanatics fantasy football league will miss Mr. Eric Dane. We know you'll be watching from the booth. Miss you, buddy. Let's keep fighting the fight to solve ALS.'

Selma Blair, who is battling multiple sclerosis, reposted a clip from their shared show Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane, adding: 'I love you. And yours.' Nina Dobrev, who worked with Dane on the 2022 film Redeeming Love, described him as warm, generous, and passionate, noting that 'ALS is a cruel and unforgiving disease.'

Sam Levinson, creator of Euphoria where Dane played Cal Jacobs, told Variety: 'I'm heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend Eric. Working with him was an honor. Being his friend was a gift.' Alyssa Milano, who starred with Dane on Charmed, recalled his razor-sharp sense of humor and how he softened when speaking about his family.

Maria Shriver, who was set to publish Dane's memoir through her imprint, wrote: 'I'm heartbroken by this devastating news about Eric Dane. What a tragedy. He was so heroic the way he handled his diagnosis.' John Stamos also shared a tribute, remembering their time together on the film Wedding Wars.

Family Statement and Personal Life

In their statement, Dane's family shared: 'With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.'

The statement continued: 'Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always.'

Dane is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two teenage daughters, Billie Beatrice (15) and Georgia Geraldine (13). Late last year, it was announced that Dane had been preparing a memoir titled Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, scheduled for release in 2026, detailing his experiences with ALS.

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to loss of muscle control. Dane announced his diagnosis in April of last year, using his platform to raise awareness about the condition until his passing.
