Cuba Confirms Fifth Death Following Florida Speedboat Shooting Incident
Cuban officials have announced that a fifth individual has died as a result of a violent confrontation last month involving a speedboat registered in Florida. The vessel allegedly opened fire on Cuban soldiers in waters off the island's northern coastline, escalating tensions in the region.
Details of the Fatal Incident and Investigation
The Cuban interior ministry released a statement late on Thursday confirming that Roberto Álvarez Ávila passed away on March 4 due to injuries sustained during the altercation. The ministry noted that the remaining injured detainees are continuing to receive specialized medical care tailored to their specific health conditions.
According to Cuban authorities, the incident occurred on February 26 when Cuban soldiers intercepted a speedboat carrying ten individuals as it approached the island. The passengers, described as armed Cubans residing in the United States, allegedly fired upon the troops. Cuban officials claim these individuals were attempting to infiltrate the island with the intent to unleash terrorism.
In the ensuing exchange, Cuban soldiers reportedly killed four people and wounded six others. The interior ministry stated that statements from the detainees and investigative procedures have reinforced evidence against them, with new elements emerging that implicate other individuals based in the U.S.
Legal Actions and Evidence Presented
Earlier this week, Cuba filed terrorism charges against six suspects who were aboard the speedboat. The government displayed items allegedly recovered from the vessel, including a dozen high-powered weapons, over 12,800 rounds of ammunition, and eleven pistols.
Cuban authorities have provided limited specifics about the shooting but indicated the boat was approximately 1.6 kilometers northeast of Cayo Falcones, off the north coast. They also released the boat's registration number, though The Associated Press could not independently verify these details due to Florida's non-public boat registration records.
Broader Implications and Regional Tensions
This incident threatens to heighten diplomatic strains between U.S. President Donald Trump and Cuban leadership. Cuba's economy, which has recently relied heavily on Venezuelan oil support, faces uncertainty following a U.S. military operation that deposed former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
The shooting underscores ongoing geopolitical friction in the Caribbean, with potential repercussions for U.S.-Cuba relations and regional stability.
