Iran Reportedly Elects New Supreme Leader as Israel Issues Chilling Warning
Iran has reportedly selected a new supreme leader through a majority decision by the country's assembly of experts, according to state media reports. This critical development follows the assassination of former leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes last Saturday, which has ignited a wave of retaliatory attacks across the Middle East.
Selection Process and Announcement
Ahmad Alamolhoda, a member of the assembly, stated that the head of the Secretariat, Hosseini Bushehri, is now responsible for publicly announcing the decision. The assembly of experts, an 88-member body of Islamic scholars loyal to the regime, is tasked with appointing Iran's supreme leader. Earlier, Ayatollah Mohammadmehdi Mirbaqeri indicated that a majority consensus was nearly achieved, though some obstacles required resolution before finalisation.
Escalating Regional Conflict
The assassination of Khamenei has triggered significant military escalation. Iran has launched attacks on military targets in Israel and US-allied states in the Gulf, with some strikes extending beyond military zones to civilian sites and energy facilities. In Tehran, huge fireballs erupted overnight on Sunday as US and Israeli forces struck oil facilities, reportedly killing four people and targeting fuel storage complexes.
Meanwhile, Israel has conducted multiple strikes in southern Lebanon and Beirut over the past week, resulting in at least 294 fatalities and 1,023 injuries. The Israeli military claimed these actions targeted Hezbollah command centres and weapons storage facilities, prompting hundreds of thousands of civilians to evacuate their homes. Additionally, Iran reported that a US-Israeli attack on a girls school in Minab killed more than 160 people.
Israel's Stern Warning
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a chilling warning, promising many surprises for the next phase of the conflict. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) explicitly stated they will continue to pursue every successor of Khamenei. In a post on social media platform X, the IDF warned all individuals involved in the successor selection process, asserting they would not hesitate to target participants.
The IDF message read: We warn all those who intend to participate in the successor selection meeting that we will not hesitate to target you either. This stark declaration underscores the heightened tensions and Israel's determination to influence leadership transitions in Iran.
Humanitarian and Infrastructure Impact
The conflict has caused substantial damage to civilian infrastructure and energy facilities. Images show smoke billowing from the Shahran Oil Refinery in Tehran and rubble from destroyed buildings in Beirut following airstrikes. These incidents highlight the broadening scope of military engagements, affecting not only strategic targets but also public safety and economic stability in the region.
