Jimmy Bullard Opens Up About Dramatic I'm A Celebrity Exit
Former professional footballer Jimmy Bullard has publicly explained his controversial decision to quit I'm A Celebrity: South Africa, a move that triggered the most explosive argument in the ITV reality show's history and sent both himself and campmate Adam Thomas home prematurely.
The Pivotal Trial That Sparked the Confrontation
Bullard was partnered with actor Adam Thomas for a crucial trial where the losing duo would be eliminated from the competition. Despite Thomas throwing himself wholeheartedly into the challenge, Bullard almost immediately withdrew from participation. He told hosts Ant and Dec: "I just don't have it in me."
This decision infuriated Thomas, who angrily confronted his partner, shouting: "You're taking the p***!" The actor argued that Bullard should have waited until after the trial to leave the show rather than cutting short both their experiences on the program.
Bullard's Personal Reasons for Leaving
Speaking to cameras after his exit, Bullard addressed what he called the "kerfuffle" with Thomas, stating: "Letting Adam down's a killer. He's my boy, you know? From day dot, we had the craic. He wants to do well, and I get it."
The former footballer revealed he had struggled significantly with the demands of the show and said his decision stemmed partly from wanting to be with his parents. "I got my mum and dad at home, the dad ain't too well, so that comes in," Bullard explained.
He added that despite his outgoing public persona, "that doesn't necessarily mean you're ready for them trials and stuff." Bullard also mentioned missing former campmates David Haye and Gemma Collins, saying: "I lost David Haye, Gemma [Collins], they were my big bounces, I'd say. You could bounce off of them. Unfortunately, my time was up in the game."
The Heated Exchange and Aftermath
When Thomas realized Bullard was quitting on their behalf, he pleaded: "You're joking me bro. Jim, come on, man. Don't do this bro! Is that how we're going out, yeah?" Despite encouragement from Ant and Dec to continue for Thomas's sake, Bullard remained adamant, stating: "I've had enough. Sorry, boys and girls."
Thomas then stormed up to Bullard, demanding: "What's up with you, bro? If you wanted to go, go – don't take me with you. Go home in camp, don't do it on my f**ing watch." Bullard responded defiantly: "I choose when I come and when I go."
Because Bullard failed to complete any part of the trial, Ant and Dec intervened, allowing fellow campmates to vote on whether Thomas could remain. They unanimously voted in his favor.
Ongoing Tensions and Show Fallout
Almost eight months after filming, Bullard and Thomas are reportedly not on speaking terms. According to reports, Bullard is threatening not to attend the show's final, which will be filmed live in London. Unlike other celebrities who have left the program, Bullard did not complete a post-exit interview with ITV.
The spin-off show proved challenging for Thomas beyond his conflict with Bullard. The former Emmerdale actor also struggled with campmate David Haye during their time in the jungle. Taking to Instagram recently, Thomas admitted that Haye "broke" him while filming, referencing an incident where Haye criticized Thomas for asking not to do a Bushtucker Trial due to feeling unwell.
Haye had said at the time: "Who gives a s*** if he doesn't feel well. He's a grown-ass man. I don't like guys who are a bit useless. I hate them useless guys." Thomas wrote on Instagram that Haye had pushed him to his limits but added that they had since reconciled, saying: "I've told David this and he's apologised and that's that! I've moved on now, am not one to hold a grudge."
