Kim Jong Un and Daughter Ride Tank in Latest Military Display
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his teenage daughter have been photographed riding a tank together during military training exercises, according to state media reports released on Friday. This joint public appearance follows recent events where the pair watched rocket launches and fired pistols, further fueling speculation about the girl's potential future role in the country's leadership.
Military Drills and Public Appearances
The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim oversaw firing drills and other military exercises involving tank units and infantry troops on Thursday. During these drills, Kim called for the completion of war preparations, emphasizing the importance of military readiness. Photographs published by KCNA showed Kim and his daughter, both wearing black leather jackets, riding in an olive-green tank alongside other soldiers.
In the images, the teenage girl is seen sticking her head out of the tank's hatch, while Kim sits on top of the tank, smiling. This display comes just days after the father-daughter duo watched a live-fire test of multiple rocket launch systems and fired pistols during a visit to a light munitions factory last week.
Speculation About Succession
The girl, reportedly named Kim Ju Ae and approximately 13 years old, has accompanied her father to numerous high-profile military and public events since late 2022. North Korean state media has referred to her as Kim Jong Un's most beloved or respected child, publishing footage and photos that highlight their close relationship. Last September, she traveled with her father to Beijing, and during New Year's Day celebrations, she was photographed kissing him on the cheek.
South Korea's intelligence agency assessed last month that Kim Jong Un was close to designating her as his heir. However, some experts disagree with this assessment, pointing to Kim's relatively young age and the male-dominated nature of North Korea's power hierarchy. The consistent public appearances have sparked ongoing debate about whether she is being groomed for a future leadership position.
Regional Military Context
The North Korean military training occurred as the United States and South Korea were engaged in their annual joint military exercises, which North Korea views as invasion rehearsals. The U.S. and South Korea concluded an 11-day computer-simulated command post exercise on Thursday, but field training continues. This timing adds a layer of geopolitical tension to the domestic display of military prowess and familial bonding.
The combination of military drills and public appearances by Kim and his daughter underscores the regime's focus on projecting strength and continuity. As speculation about succession grows, these events are closely watched by international observers for clues about North Korea's future leadership dynamics.
