North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his teenage daughter have been photographed testing new pistols during an inspection of a light munitions factory, according to state media reports on Thursday. This visit highlights a strategic shift towards modernising conventional forces, following years of intense focus on nuclear weapons development.
Factory Inspection and Weapon Testing
North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency stated that Mr Kim visited a factory producing pistols and other light arms a day earlier. He reviewed a new pistol that had recently entered production and tested it at a shooting range, rating the weapon as "excellent." The agency's text report did not mention the presence of Kim's daughter, but accompanying photos showed her firing a pistol alongside senior military officials.
Emphasis on Military Supply
Mr Kim reportedly stressed the factory's vital role in supplying pistols and other light arms to the military and security forces. He urged expanded production capacity and the implementation of more modern production lines to enhance output.
Daughter's Increasing Visibility
His daughter, believed to be Kim Ju Ae and approximately 13 years old, has become increasingly visible since her first public appearance at a long-range missile test in November 2022. She has accompanied her father to various high-profile events, including military parades, factory inaugurations, and a September trip to Beijing. During that visit, Mr Kim held his first summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in six years.
Succession Speculation Intensifies
Her prominent public appearances have prompted South Korean intelligence officials and experts to assess that Kim Jong Un is likely grooming her as a future leader. This move aims to extend the family dynasty into a fourth generation, solidifying their control over North Korea.
Recent Military Engagements
State media last month showed the girl testing a sniper rifle as Kim presented weapons to senior officials following a ruling party congress. At that event, he issued major political and military goals for the next five years. The visit to the pistol factory followed an inspection on Tuesday, where Kim and his daughter watched the test launch of nuclear-capable cruise missiles from a naval destroyer. During that inspection, Kim called for accelerating the nuclear armament of his navy.
This series of events underscores North Korea's dual focus on advancing both its conventional and nuclear capabilities, while simultaneously hinting at potential leadership succession plans within the Kim family.
