Kuwait City Tower Engulfed in Flames Amid New Iranian Drone Strikes Across Gulf

Footage has emerged showing flames tearing through the upper floors of a prominent public building in Kuwait City, following a suspected drone attack as Iran launched a new wave of strikes across the Gulf region. The governments of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain all reported Iranian drone attacks in their countries over the weekend, with a massive fire engulfing a government office block in Kuwait's capital.

Military Response and Casualties

The Kuwait military confirmed it was dealing with a drone attack, stating that shrapnel caused damage to civilian buildings. Authorities are continuing to engage hostile aerial targets, while urging citizens and residents to adhere to safety and security instructions. In a tragic development, Kuwait's interior ministry announced on Sunday that two of its officers were killed while performing duties, though details on the circumstances were not provided. Kuwait has been actively intercepting drones and missiles launched from Iran in recent operations.

Political Context and Regional Tensions

The attack occurred hours after Iran's president, Masoud Pezeshkian, apologized for attacks on neighboring countries, urging them not to join U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran. Pezeshkian dismissed former U.S. President Donald Trump's demand for Iran's unconditional surrender as a dream, but indicated Iran's temporary leadership council had agreed to suspend attacks on nearby states unless strikes on Iran originated from their territory.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump stated that the war may only end with Iran's military and rulers wiped out, as Tehran moved toward selecting a new supreme leader. Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One he was not interested in negotiating an end to the conflict that has roiled oil markets, hurt business, and disrupted global travel.

Leadership Transition and Escalating Conflict

Iranian media reported that the clerical body charged with choosing Iran's next supreme leader could meet as soon as today to name a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed early in the conflict. According to assembly of experts member Ayatollah Mohammadmehdi Mirbaqeri, a majority consensus over the successor has more or less been reached.

The Israeli military warned it would pursue every successor in Iran's leadership, while state media reported huge explosions in parts of Tehran. Israel confirmed it had struck Iranian missile sites, command centres, and fuel depots on Saturday, with U.S.-Israeli attacks reportedly killing at least 1,332 Iranian civilians and wounding thousands, according to Iran's U.N. ambassador.

Regional Spillover and Humanitarian Toll

Iranian attacks have killed 10 people in Israel, and at least six U.S. service members have been killed, with Iran claiming on Sunday it had struck U.S. bases in Kuwait. In a separate development, Israel launched fresh attacks in Lebanon on Saturday after the Iran-aligned militia Hezbollah fired across the border. Israel warned Lebanon of a very heavy price if it did not rein in Hezbollah militants, as the death toll from Israel's attacks on Lebanon since Monday rose to around 300.

The conflict continues to destabilize the region, with significant implications for global security and energy markets, as diplomatic efforts remain stalled amid escalating military actions.
