Birmingham's iconic New Street Station has undergone a striking transformation with a Peaky Blinders-themed installation, featuring the famous Ozzy the Bull sculpture sporting a flat cap. This immersive tribute marks the upcoming launch of the film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, set to premiere soon.
Immersive Installation and Public Engagement
The station concourse now boasts period-inspired scenic elements reflecting early 20th-century Birmingham, created in partnership with Visit Birmingham, the West Midlands, and Network Rail. A red carpet has been laid out at the feet of the 33ft-high mechanical bull, enhancing the cinematic atmosphere.
From Friday until Monday, March 2, between 12pm and 6pm, members of the public are invited to take advantage of a free portrait service. This staffed photo facility offers printed keepsake portraits, allowing thousands of fans to commemorate Birmingham's rich film heritage and participate in the celebration.
Economic and Tourism Impact
Martin Simms, head of film and TV support agency Production Central WM, highlighted the significance of this event. "New Street Station is one of the most visited stations outside of London," he said. "Peaky Blinders is a global phenomenon, and it feels right to celebrate it in the heart of Birmingham, where the original story originated."
Simms noted the substantial impact of the hit series on local screen tourism, revealing that US visitors to Birmingham have increased by 50% as a result of Peaky Blinders. This surge has helped put the city on the map, boosting the local economy. He added that filming Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man alone injected approximately £1 million into the regional economy.
Film Locations and Production Details
When asked about specific filming locations, Simms remained discreet but hinted at notable sites. "I won't spoil it for everyone, but there are some very well-known locations, including areas around the Council House and Digbeth Loc. Studios, which are central to the production," he explained.
Production Central WM, backed by the West Midlands Combined Authority, serves as the region's dedicated production services agency. It brings together locations, crew, and facilities for content producers, supporting the growing film industry in Birmingham.
Background on Ozzy the Bull
Ozzy the Bull, named in honour of the late rock legend Ozzy Osbourne, was installed at New Street Station in 2023. The moving sculpture originally gained fame as the beloved centrepiece of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in 2022. Its new Peaky Blinders cap adds a playful touch to this already iconic landmark, blending Birmingham's cultural heritage with its cinematic future.
