Russia Launches Massive Assault on Kyiv Region Amid Easter Truce Discussions
Russia unleashed a significant missile and drone offensive on Friday, targeting areas surrounding the Ukrainian capital, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. This aggressive action occurred as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated Kyiv's willingness to consider a potential ceasefire for the upcoming Easter holiday.
Details of the Kyiv Region Attack
Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv regional military administration, described the assault as a "massive Russian missile and drone attack" in a Telegram post. The strikes focused on three satellite towns: Bucha, Fastiv, and Obukhiv. According to Kalashnyk, one person was killed, at least eight others were injured, and approximately twenty animals perished when a veterinary clinic was hit.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, condemned the attack on social media, stating that "almost half a thousand drones and cruise missiles" targeted Ukraine overnight. He criticized Moscow's response to ceasefire proposals, saying, "This is how Moscow responds to Ukraine’s Easter ceasefire proposals — with brutal attacks."
Easter Truce Proposal and Diplomatic Efforts
President Zelenskyy, speaking to reporters on Thursday, confirmed that Ukraine remains open to a truce during Easter, which is celebrated on April 12 according to the Julian calendar observed by Orthodox churches in both nations. He revealed that the proposal had been conveyed to Moscow through United States diplomatic channels, though the Kremlin's response remains uncertain.
This is not the first time Zelenskyy has offered an Easter ceasefire. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously emphasized that Moscow seeks a comprehensive peace settlement rather than a temporary halt in hostilities. Last Easter, President Vladimir Putin declared a unilateral 30-hour ceasefire, but both sides later accused each other of violations.
Additional Casualties and Regional Impacts
In northern Ukraine, another civilian died on Friday after a Russian guided aerial bomb struck a residential building in Shostka, located in the Sumy region near the Russian border. Local Governor Oleh Hryhorov reported that three more individuals were hospitalized with injuries, including a 29-year-old woman in serious condition.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that 192 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight over Russia and occupied Crimea. In the Leningrad region, over 1,100 kilometers from the border, two people were hospitalized following a Ukrainian drone strike that also ignited a fire in an unoccupied building within the Morozov industrial zone. This area houses a state-owned plant producing explosives and ammunition components, which is under Western sanctions due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Further incidents included a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia's Belgorod region, bordering Ukraine, which injured twelve people, including at least three Russian soldiers, according to local Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. Separately, seven individuals were wounded when a drone hit a commercial facility in the same region. Additionally, Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, reported that four drones were downed approaching the capital, with no mention of casualties or damage.
