Trump Claims Iran Offered 'Very Significant Prize' in Oil and Strait of Hormuz Deal
President Donald Trump has made optimistic but vague assertions about negotiations with Iran, stating that Tehran provided the United States with a "prize" concerning oil supplies and the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Trump described this as a "very big present" worth a "tremendous amount of money," though he declined to specify details.
Trump's Statements on Iranian Concessions
During a ceremony to swear in Markwayne Mullin as the new head of the Department of Homeland Security, Trump told reporters, "They're gonna make a deal." He added, "They did something yesterday that was amazing, actually. They gave us a present and the present arrived today. It was a very big present, worth a tremendous amount of money. I'm not going to tell you what that present is, but it was a very significant prize, and they gave it to us." Trump further claimed that this gesture indicated the U.S. was "dealing with the right people."
When pressed for more information, the president clarified that the prize was "oil and gas related" and tied to the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil shipments. Additionally, Trump asserted that Iran had agreed "they will never have a nuclear weapon." He did not provide further specifics but claimed the U.S. would soon have control "of anything we want."
Iran's Denial and Ongoing Conflict
In contrast to Trump's claims, Iranian leadership has strongly denied engaging in negotiations to end the nearly month-long conflict. A spokesperson for Iran's top military command stated on Tuesday that its armed forces will not cease until "complete victory" is achieved, dismissing the president's assertions of a partial ceasefire during talks. Earlier this week, Iran labeled Trump's claims about negotiations as "fake news," highlighting the disconnect between the two sides.
The conflict has resulted in significant consequences, including the deaths of 13 U.S. service members, spiking oil prices, disruptions to the global energy system, and regular attacks on U.S. allies in the Persian Gulf. Polling indicates many Americans are unsupportive of the war effort, and Trump's approval ratings have hit new lows amid the ongoing hostilities.
Trump's Defense of War Progress
Despite the challenges, Trump argued that the war has been more successful than media reports suggest. He stated, "If you read the papers, you'd think we're tied, you'd think we're in a tough battle. We are roaming free over Tehran." Trump also described how the U.S. was refraining from striking a key electric plant due to what he called encouraging signs from Iranian negotiators, emphasizing, "We can do whatever we want."
The president faces heavy pressure to secure a positive outcome for the U.S., as the conflict continues to strain international relations and domestic support. The situation remains fluid, with Trump's vague claims of a "prize" from Iran adding to the uncertainty surrounding potential diplomatic resolutions.
