Trump Invokes Holy War in Final Ultimatum to Iran Over Strait of Hormuz
Donald Trump has issued a furious final ultimatum to Iran, invoking holy war rhetoric and setting a critical 48-hour deadline for the nation to open the Strait of Hormuz to shipping. Writing on Truth Social, the former president reminded Iran of a ten-day deadline, declaring "Glory be to GOD!" and warning that "hell will reign down on them" if they fail to comply.
Escalating Conflict and Military Losses
The ultimatum comes amid heightened tensions, as the US military presses ahead with a frantic search for a missing pilot in southwestern Iran. This follows the Islamic Republic's downing of a US warplane, identified as an F-15E Strike Eagle, marking the first time the United States has lost aircraft in Iranian territory during the six-week war. One service member was rescued, but at least one remains missing, adding pressure on the Trump administration to end the fighting.
The conflict, which began with joint US-Israel strikes on February 28, has resulted in thousands of deaths, shaken global markets, disrupted key shipping routes, and spiked fuel prices. Iran continues to respond to ongoing airstrikes with attacks across the region, including an apparent drone strike that damaged the Dubai headquarters of US technology company Oracle.
Diplomatic Efforts and Regional Threats
Despite the hostilities, Iran has signaled willingness to join talks aimed at stopping the war. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran "has never refused to go to Islamabad," where Pakistan plans to host negotiations. Mediators from Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt are working to broker a ceasefire, with a proposed compromise including a cessation of hostilities to allow diplomatic settlement.
However, Iran has also issued veiled threats to disrupt traffic through a second strategic waterway, the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, which is a crucial choke point for global trade. Parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf questioned the strait's significance, hinting at further escalation.
Human Cost and Global Impact
The war has inflicted a severe human toll:
- Over 1,900 people killed in Iran
- More than 1,300 deaths in Lebanon
- Over 1 million displaced in Lebanon
- Dozens of fatalities in Gulf Arab states, the occupied West Bank, Israel, and among US service members
Iran's actions have greatly slowed oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz, causing fuel prices to skyrocket. Trump has alternated between threatening Iran and urging other nations to secure their own oil supplies.
The UN Security Council is expected to address the reopening of the strait, as global leaders grapple with the conflict's far-reaching consequences on trade and stability.
