Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has issued a strong condemnation of what she described as "reckless" Iranian missile strikes targeting the joint United States-United Kingdom military base located at Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands. The attack, which occurred before the UK government granted the United States permission to strike Iranian missile sites threatening the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, involved two intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
Details of the Attack and UK Response
According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, one of the missiles launched by Iran was successfully intercepted and shot down by a United States warship, while the other missile failed in flight and did not reach its intended target. The exact timing of when these missiles were fired remains unclear, with the Ministry of Defence declining to provide specific commentary on the launch details.
In her statements to broadcasters, Yvette Cooper emphasized that the UK government supports only defensive actions to protect British interests and allies in the region. She stressed the importance of achieving a swift resolution to the ongoing conflict, while clarifying that the United Kingdom has maintained a distinct position separate from both the United States and Israel regarding offensive operations.
Conservative Calls for Transparency
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has publicly urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to "come clean" regarding the specifics of this latest attack on British troops and to provide a clear explanation for why the British public was not immediately informed about the incident. This demand for greater transparency highlights growing political tensions over the handling of national security matters.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Starmer engaged in diplomatic discussions on Saturday, speaking with Cypriot president Nikos Christodoulides to reaffirm that the Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri would not be utilized by American forces for targeting Iranian missile sites. He also held talks with Bahrain's Crown Prince, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, to address the broader regional conflict.
Strategic Importance of Diego Garcia
Diego Garcia, situated approximately 3,800 kilometers (2,360 miles) from Iran, serves as a critically important strategic military asset. The base features an airfield capable of accommodating long-range US bombers, along with extensive fuel storage facilities, radar installations, and a deep-water port. It is currently home to around 2,500 personnel, predominantly American military members.
The United Kingdom has previously agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius while negotiating a leaseback arrangement for the military base. This location has historically functioned as a key launchpad for American military operations throughout the Middle East over many years.
Regional Escalation and Government Actions
Iran has significantly intensified its attacks against neighboring Gulf states in recent days while maintaining a tight grip on shipping traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence condemned Iran's actions, stating that these "reckless attacks" pose a direct threat to British interests and allied nations in the region.
The spokesperson confirmed that the UK government has authorized the United States to utilize British military bases for "specific and limited defensive operations" aimed at countering these threats. Additionally, it is understood that Prime Minister Starmer will convene a Cobra emergency committee meeting next week to develop plans addressing cost of living issues affecting UK households, which have been exacerbated by the ongoing regional conflict.
