UK Prepares to Evacuate Over 100,000 Nationals from Middle East Amid Crisis
UK Plans Evacuation of 100,000+ Nationals from Middle East

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has disclosed that 102,000 British nationals have officially registered their presence in the Middle East, as government officials urgently develop comprehensive plans for the potential evacuation of more than 100,000 citizens from the volatile region.

Massive Evacuation Planning Underway

Senior officials are understood to be actively working on detailed contingency plans for what could become one of the largest peacetime evacuations in recent British history. The Foreign Office is preparing for the possibility of extracting over 100,000 Britons from multiple Middle Eastern countries simultaneously.

Registration Scheme Activated

Ms Cooper indicated that approximately 300,000 British citizens are currently located in Gulf countries that have been specifically targeted by Iran in recent attacks. The government has urgently advised those in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Palestine, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to register their presence through the Foreign Office's online system.

"The latest figure I have from this morning is we have 102,000 people who have responded to our proposal to ask people to register their presence," Ms Cooper told BBC Breakfast. "So we know where they are, particularly in these Gulf countries that have been targeted, and so that we can get them rapid information."

Travel Chaos Across the Region

The evacuation planning comes amid significant travel disruption across the Middle East. Many commercial flights have been grounded since Iranian attacks began on Saturday, with airspace closures affecting numerous countries in the region.

At London Heathrow, nearly half of the scheduled flights to the Middle East were cancelled on Sunday alone. Aviation analytics company Cirium reported that 24 of the 56 planned departures from Britain's busiest airport were axed.

Major Airlines Adjust Operations

British Airways confirmed it is "closely monitoring the situation" and has cancelled "a number of our flights to the Middle East." Virgin Atlantic has similarly axed two Heathrow-bound flights on Monday - one from Dubai, UAE and another from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - while rerouting other services.

Qatar Airways announced on Monday morning that all its flights remain suspended indefinitely, adding to the growing travel chaos affecting thousands of passengers.

Unprecedented Scale of Operation

While the government has previously utilized the registration scheme to provide urgent updates during international crises, officials have never before needed to coordinate assistance for such a large number of British nationals spread across so many different countries simultaneously.

"This is deeply stressful obviously for people because we're talking about a lot of people who are holidaymakers, who were transit passengers just passing through or people on business visits to the region," Ms Cooper explained. "We want to make sure they can get safely home."

Official Guidance for British Nationals

The Foreign Office is advising all British nationals in the region to:

  • Follow instructions from local authorities immediately
  • Monitor official Foreign Office travel advice continuously
  • Prepare for rapidly changing security situations
  • Maintain communication with the British embassy or consulate

Officials expect travel advice to change rapidly as the situation develops, with the registration system serving as the primary method for delivering urgent updates to affected British citizens across the Middle East.
