Compulsory Evacuation of Children Begins in Sloviansk as Russian Forces Advance
Ukraine has initiated the compulsory evacuation of children from the city of Sloviansk, a key stronghold in the Donbas region, signalling a severe deterioration in the security situation. Russian forces have been slowly advancing to the north and east of the city, with reports indicating they are approximately 20 kilometres from the city's edge at various points along the frontline.
Strategic Importance of Sloviansk in the Donbas Conflict
Sloviansk remains one of several towns and cities under Ukrainian control within an urban "fortress belt" in the eastern Donetsk region, which forms part of the broader Donbas area. Russia views control of the entire Donbas, renowned for its coalmines and heavy industry, as a critical military objective. Currently, Ukraine retains control of just under a quarter of the Donetsk region, making the defence of Sloviansk pivotal in the ongoing conflict.
Escalation in Drone Warfare and Regional Tensions
In a significant escalation, Ukraine launched over 280 drones at Russia overnight, marking one of the largest barrages since the war's inception. Russian state news reported that 283 drones were intercepted, with Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirming 27 drones headed towards the capital were downed. Additionally, two individuals were wounded in drone attacks in the Saratov region, highlighting the expanding reach of the conflict.
EU Funding Blocked by Hungary Amid Energy Disputes
Despite a Hungarian veto, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine still anticipates receiving the first tranche of a 90-billion-euro loan from the European Union next month. EU leaders failed to persuade Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to lift his blockade of this crucial funding, which is essential for sustaining Ukraine's military and economic efforts against Russia.
Orbán has threatened further actions against Ukraine, including potential disruptions to electricity supply and blocking new EU sanctions against Russia, citing tensions over Hungary's access to Russian oil via a pipeline through Ukrainian territory. He emphasised, "We have a lot of cards in our hands," underscoring the geopolitical complexities at play.
International Implications and Defence Concerns
Zelenskyy noted that negotiations with US officials will seek clarity on postponed trilateral talks with Russia, delayed due to the Iran war, and address recent US decisions to ease sanctions on the Russian energy sector. Meanwhile, US defence officials revealed that a significant number of Patriot air defence missiles have been relocated from Europe to the Middle East, creating concerning gaps in Europe's defences against Russia.
In a related development, Hungarian security operatives allegedly administered a "forced injection" to a detained Ukrainian during a raid on bank vehicles, with sources suggesting it contained a relaxant to aid interrogations. Additionally, Russia targeted Ukrainian oil and gas facilities in Poltava and Sumy regions, causing damage and operational suspensions, while Ukraine has deployed military units to protect infrastructure in Middle Eastern nations like the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
