Val Kilmer Set for AI-Powered Resurrection in Upcoming Historical Drama
The late Hollywood icon Val Kilmer, who passed away last year at the age of 65, is poised to make a posthumous return to the silver screen through advanced artificial intelligence technology. Kilmer will star in the new film As Deep As the Grave, a drama based on true events from the 1920s, with his performance being digitally recreated with the full backing of his estate.
Role Tailored to Kilmer's Legacy and Heritage
In the movie, Kilmer is set to portray Father Fintan, a character described as a Native American spiritualist and Catholic priest. Director and writer Coerte Voorhees revealed to Variety that this role was specifically crafted for Kilmer, drawing on the actor's well-documented advocacy for Native American rights and his claimed Cherokee ancestry. "He was the actor I wanted to play this role," Voorhees stated, emphasizing how the part connected to Kilmer's personal heritage and his affection for the American south-west.
Originally, Kilmer was attached to the project before his death from throat cancer, but his illness prevented him from filming on set. Now, Voorhees is collaborating with Kilmer's estate, including his daughter Mercedes, to utilise state-of-the-art generative AI to resurrect the actor's likeness and performance. Kilmer's son, Jack, an actor known for his role in Lord of Chaos, has also expressed support for the initiative.
Family Support and Controversy Considerations
According to Voorhees, the Kilmer family has been instrumental in moving the project forward, highlighting the importance they place on the film's narrative. "His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this," Voorhees explained. He added that Kilmer himself believed the story was significant enough to attach his name to it, despite potential controversies surrounding the use of AI in filmmaking. "Despite the fact some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted," Voorhees noted.
Film Details and Broader AI Trends in Hollywood
As Deep As the Grave, previously titled Canyon Del Muerto, recounts the true story of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris, who worked alongside the Navajo people in the 1920s to uncover the Ancestral Puebloan civilization, considered North America's earliest. The cast includes Harry Potter actor Tom Felton as Earl, Bafta winner Abigail Lawrie as Ann, with supporting roles from Oscar winner Wes Studi and actor Jacob Fortune-Lloyd.
Voorhees confirmed that the AI-generated version of Kilmer will feature in a "significant" portion of the film, using images from various stages of the actor's life to recreate his appearance across different decades. This project aligns with a growing trend in Hollywood, where AI is increasingly being integrated into film production. For instance, in 2024, Brady Corbet's Oscar-winning film The Brutalist employed AI to refine actor Adrien Brody's Hungarian accent, while last year saw Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine partner with startup ElevenLabs to develop AI versions of their voices.
Kilmer's life was previously chronicled in the 2021 documentary Val, which utilised archive footage and voiceover from his son. This new AI-driven endeavour marks a pioneering step in preserving and extending an actor's legacy through digital means, sparking discussions about ethics and technology in the entertainment industry.
